How much?

How much?
What is the maximum HP that a stock auto tranny will take? I'm planning on some mild mods, I don't want to over do it and have to replace the trans. So what do you think how far can I push it?

Most guys on here don’t like to push their truck if just have an ez, and that’s only around 60hp, any more than that and it could get $$$ in repairs. There are some really good threads on how much a stock auto can take, if you wanna search.

Lets put it this way, there are stock trannys that blow @ less than 35,000 miles and then there's ones like mine! 130,350 and holdin stron with the comp (wire tapped) and I rail on her all day long! auto trannys are hit and miss. but like lots of people say you'll pay one day!

Don't baby
Contrary to what you may think, drive it with more foot rather than less as it will build transmission pressure faster. Also standard output motors had 235hp with high output motors only 245, just about says it all when the auto wasn't available with the HO. Twogun

I agree, don't baby the throttle, and put in shift kit and it will hold up quite well IF tranny is in good condition already, and you don't go too overboard in fueling. Just had my tranny updated with h.p. parts, and all internals were in excellent shape. Torque converter was just starting to show very slight signs of light bluing. I tow lots and it always held great with Van Aaken. When I stacked MAD ECM with Van Aaken, only then did I actually feel converter slip once on hard launch burnout, this with stock trans and only a shift kit. I did transmission upgrades BEFORE I killed it with power upgrades, because I knew that it would not hold that kind of power for too long(cheaper that way)

One of my friends in our RVing group wanted a little more "umph" to pull his 5th wheel with his 2000 2500, so he added an EZ - nothing else. Result - a fried lock-up clutch in his stock 47RE torque converter within a year. Is this typical? Probably not, but it can happen!
By the way, the difference between 460 lb-ft and 505 lb-ft of torque is probably a more significant reason that the 47RE wasn't offered behind the HO.
