I believe they were starting with 4" at the beginning of the muffler. If you look in the archives you may be able to find it. I know a full 4" would be the best way to go if you have an extra $300 laying around.

Loud to me may not be to you but, my earoturbine is LOUD 
to me. My neighbor is way off the road and I baby it in the mornings so as not to bother anyone and he still wakes up. 
...he must actually already be awake or a very light sleeper. Told me it sounded like a dump truck

this si what you all should do....get the 4" downpipe that doesnt flare to 3.5 and just run a straight pipe thats 4" about 2 feet in front of the rear axle....boom 8)

I tried turn down before the axle.... Talk about loud in the cab!!!
lasted one afternoon and put it back the way it was....

really? :'( my friend has a 1st gen and said he put it about 1 foot in front of the axle with no turndown and said it was good

3 flaws with that design...1. soot on everything under the truck, and anything behind it 2. heat and condensation will excellerate rust, 3. The bed acts like a sound chamber and you (I) can hardly stand it in the cab (noise fatigue) very loud. Waste of time....IMO

Ok... Went to the local shop today... They said that due to the offset inlet and outlet... they would need to have some extra joints to make the tail pipe set right... my price was going to be about $100 How have you guys been installing the straight 4" pipe?

Nope, no cat or resonator.
FWIW - buddy of mine just bought a brand spanken new 04. Monday we are going to straight pipe it turbo to tail in 4" stainless. Since my 99 is already turbo to tail in 4" stainless, I will be able to give you a pretty good idea of how the two compare.

If I get a 03+ and get a 4 inch exhaust including downpipe is there any kind of modification that needs to be done to the body or is it straight forward bolt on. I have a 97 stroke and i was going to put downpipe and 4 inch exhaust but I will have to cut and bend on the firewall to get it in and it will still have chance for vibration if I dont get it right. Will a 4 inch exh void you warranty?

genosgarage.com sells the replacement pipe and i think that is around 40 bones - 100 bux from a muffler shop is robbery
not sure if you have to be a tdr member to deal w/geno's?

...........and one more thing....one of the post asked why it was 3.5 to the muffler and 4 thereafter -- because DC is CHEAP! and they THINK you may feel more like a macho man w/that big 4" tailpipe
because the 4" tailpipe serves NO PURPOSE with that "obstruction" for a muffler
