how to jack up a 96 ram 2500 4x4 turbo diesel

Can someone please advise the correct way to jack up this truck. I am trying to replace the shocks. The travel height of the jack is way to short. I have a 3 1/2 ton jack. The manual says to put jack stands underneath the frame. The frame is 17 inches off the ground. I was going to use wood to increase the jack lifting height but that seems dangerous. I need to increase the height of my jack stands too.

Short of using a tow truck to lift the truck, you might have to block the jack. I have also raised my 98 at the axles.

I think most people just jack it up at the axle until the jack maxes out, then put the jackstands under the frame, then let the axle down.

That being said... if all you are doing is changing the shocks, you don't need to jack up the truck. Just do it with the truck sitting on the ground. Take off the top nut from the shock, then the shock tower (3 nuts), then the lower shock bolt. It will pull right out through the top.

i always jack it up on the axle, and put my stands under the axle, or put a stack of solid lumber under the tires then let it back down.

as stated, if all you are doing is the socks just keep it on the ground and it shouldn't be a problem . . .

Thanks for your posts. If I remove the shocks with the wheels on the ground, how much force will there be on new bilistien shocks rated for over 8400 lbs GVW? I do not know if I will be able to compress the shock enough to install it. I think that is the reason to lift the truck up off the ground.

I allways jack the truck up off the axle then put 6ton jack stands under the frame there the only ones that are big enough
