You can recalibrate yourself with the Smarty pluss have a code reader.

I get 22mpg runnin mine between 80 and 85mph on the interstate. And that is not just babying it either. My truck is only turning about 2k rpm's at 80 with the 3:55's and .69:1 overdrive ratio. Advancing the timing helped too. Dad gets 20-21mpg consistently in his stock 98 12 valve. I think the 12 valves are the best for fuel mileage personally. Dad doesent get as good of mileage as me on the interstate because of the 5 speed. An auto with 3:55's is Ideal for the interstate.

12V and 24V are in different leagues for MPG. Id' consider 20mpg to be weak for a 12V, but good for a 24V.

Heck, even with the superior HPCR technology, most of the CR trucks have a hard time cracking 20mpg because the technology is calibrated for emissions, not mpg.

Smarty has helped mine a little. Also if you buy the smarty, recalibrate your own speedometer.

I think also using cruise control does wonders for millage. I just did a trip of about 400 miles, average speed of 72 MPH, smarty on 3, and averaged 19 and changed hand calculated mpg. I was running the AC all the time and I climbed a bunch of hills along with a few mountains. I figure that is decent with the 4.10 gear I have. I am hoping changing the air intake system and bolting on a larger exhaust will yield me a mile or two better if I am not romping on it.

I run my tires at 78 psi front and about 60 psi rear when not towing. My tires are wearing perfectly and the truck seems to like the air combo. When I have less air, my front tires act like the alignment is out and they start wearing funny.
I would think that running with max air pressure will give the best mileage by reducing the rolling resistance at the price of the ride quality.

I'd bet you're right. You're lucky that they are wearing properly at full pressure. Guys running the wider treads would wear them out faster in the middle with the higher pressures. You'd get better mileage, but where your tires signifcantly faster. You'd save fuel, but not cash. Thats where a set of 215/85 or 235/85's would be good. Run higher pressures, plus the narrower tread should yeild better mileage.

Slowing down does wonders for mileage. In December (on winter fuel), I followed a semi home in a snow storm for 500km. Did 80-90km/h the whole way. I filled up, and I figured out I had gotten over 21mpg. If I break 18 in the summer doing my normal driving (120 km/h highway, some city), I'm doing good.

On a side note, it will be interesting to see how my mileage changes when I go to the p-pump. 12v's get good mileage already, no thanks to their head. Hopefully the pump and better head of the 24v will get me some better mileage.

Make sure to play with your comp settings my juice gives me better mileage on setting 5 than 1 (best mpg) at highway speeds but for stop and go its better in tow mode setting 2 other than that slow down i can get 22 mpg at 65 but it drops fast at 80 - 85.

The 275's gave me a solid 1mpg increase when I ran them. With an EZ/275 I could knock down 20mpg all day long on the highway and that was with me doing 72mph on 35's. I also had 4" exhaust and a scotty 2 intake.

I'm running synthetics in everything except the transfer case and I didn't notice any MPG increase running those.

I've also done tests at 60mph and 65mph and neither gave me enough of an increase to warrant going that slow. I gained .5mpg at 60mph vs. 72mph. 65mph didn't net me anything. I keep saying 72mph because that's the speed that I've determined gets me the best mpg. I don't even bother with in town mpg. I get like 13 in the city.

As far as electronics goes, it's hit and miss with the smarty on fuel saver. Some gain some don't. A timing box is definately beneficial not only to mileage but also in lowering EGT's.

Keep tire pressures at max PSI constantly. I run mine at 50psi all day every day.

For the cost of a GV overdrive it would take you a long time to pay it off.

In addition to what others are suggesting, if you were considering the GV, you might as well scrap that idea and spend your extra $$ on a trans kit (TCM, TC, and VB).
You might be able to pick up a few with a TC lockup in all gears, assuming you do stop/go city driving and you have an auto trans...

Also keep your radiator clean (between the IC and Rad)... less fan drag = more mpg.

I make the trip from Beaumont to New Orleans and back every friday night/saturday morning, and I regularly get 22+ mpg. Of course i keep the speed at around 60-65, and make sure the tires are good and aired up. And the trip to New Orleans I haul 1000 pounds in the bed, under the Roll-n-Lock cover. That's just my 2 cents worth. Have a great day.

P.S. --I hear that those VW diesels get around 50mpg. But they look funny with that goosneck hookup on the roof...LOL Good Luck!
