Hot Egts With 64/14
so whats goin on? i put my htt 71 series 64/14 on today and test drove it, my egts were 150-200 degrees hotter in town and about 150 degress hotter when cruising 50-65mph, the only fuel mods are laser cut dvs and a #4 fuel plate, in valet mode i can hit 1200degress wot, and with valet mode off i can still peg the pyro at 1500 at wot , i was going to upghrade my injectors to 435's but im not sure now, why such high temps?

most larger turbos will run hotter at cruising speed, or when just cruising in town. But once pushed and start making boost EGT's should be slow to rise

ya i guess that makes sense about having higher egts when cruising, but when i hammer it temps get hot and i have'nt upgraded the injectors yet, with larger injsctors will my around town and cruising temps be hotter too. i would like 500 rwhp and was told this turbo will handle 575hp, i would like larger injectors but im not sure. any thoughts?
thanks alot

when i first got my turbo, the egts were pretty high,i could peg my pyro very easily but once i made the twins and tuned them i have alot harder time hitting 1300. but the larger housing allows more air in the exhaust which heats up but it helps with a complete burn, so if you adjust your pump maybe switch out those laser cuts you could get the same power with less smoke and egts.

Something doesn't sound quite right.
I upgraded from a 62/12 to the 64/14 and have the 435's, laser cut's homemade #100 plate and bench tuned pump. I could easily peg 1500*+ on the smaller turbo. With the 64/14 (without the 71 mm exhaust wheel) I was having trouble getting it past 1300 until I put in a different profile plate (a very aggressive #10) and reworked the AFC. Now, I can push past 1300.
If you have smaller injectors and the rest the same as mine, you really shouldn't be seeing those temps at WOT. The cruising temps will be higher due to the larger exhaust side so those sound ok.
Did you make any changes to the plate/governor arm? Anything blocking air intake or exhaust? Check all connections again and then give HTT a call.

I think I remember reading another post about a guy who was running a HTGT64/14 and was complaining about lack of power and high temps with the new turbo. IIRC he called HTT and they said he needed more fuel. Id say throw some injectors in it.

thanks for the reply, sounds like you have the setup that i am going for, i slid the plate forward, but thats it, i don't know how to do the governor arm adjustment or the afc thing, im wondering if when the stupid diesel shop screwed up my timing that when they redid it, that they still have it done wrong, im going to buy the timing tools this week so i can set it right, maybe thats whats wrong, by the way how much hp are you making? thanks

You have too much turbo on that truck! You aren't getting the turbo to spool because you don't have enough injector to get it going. Yes....you do see 40psi boost, but by the time you get the turbo spooling....you have built up too much heat & the turbo is "running behind" on keeping up. You need a bigger injector to spool up that turbo before the heat builds up in the cylinder. I ran a HTB2 64/14 & had the same issue....1600* real quick. I switched to a HTB2 62/12 & egts dropped 250*.
