You guys need to check for boost leaks. The intercooler boot after the turbo seems to be plenty on the short side when used with these turbo's and tends to pull of one side and can be hard to see. I had to put a longer one on cause of this.

Already done that, have pressured the whole boost side up with a regulated pressure. No leaks.

Got home form work. Disabled the wastegate by plugging the 1/8 pipe plug port in the compressor housing. Took the truck out. With T/C in lockup mode I could get right at 40 psi boost. Turbo spools up so slow it isn't even funny. With mods turned off turbo spools up faster but still slow and builds about 32 lbs boost. This is what I have learned. I went from a HTT HX35/40 Hybrid that spooled slow and had high exhaust temps to a turbo that spools slower, builds less boost and still gets hot. All I can figure now is that it is too much turbo. What use is a wastegate if you never even approach the kind of heat and pressure that could overspeed the turbo. Tomorrow I will talk with HTT and see what my options are. Anyone want a brand new turbo-not for free unfortunately

Check your exhaust manifold for cracks, top and bottom. If there isn't any, make sure your bolts are tight and the gaskets are not leaking. Also, what air filter are you running?

I'm to the point where there is nothing really left to check. No exhaust leaks, no boost leaks, checked differentail across air to air, just checked valve lash, back pressure, plenty of flow with no restriction through my K&N intake, pop tested nozzles, even bore scoped cylinders. Too much turbo I guess.

I had Mach F1.6 injectors with the Quick Diesel 64/12 that I am running right now and it spool very well, also. Maybe you might consider changing from the 14mm to the 12mm. The Quick Diesel is a fantastic turbo and the 12mm would match up to your automatic transmission very well.

I have a hard time with it being to much turbo. Maybe on the low settings, but with everything set on kill....no way! Just for reference, I run mach6 220hp sticks, hot juice and a pro street 66 and can hit 43psi on injectors alone and 53 with everything on kill.

I had the same issues...Here is my list.
1.] Installed a 64/14 HTB2....spooled slow [around 1800rpm], high egts [1600* fast towing 15k], lots of smoke [too much for the street].
2.] Installed a 12 housing to get faster spoolup....lit at 1700rpm, higher egts, no better.
3.] Installed a 62/12 HTB2....fast initial spoolup [around 1100rpm], but slow to reach peak boost towing 15k = too much heat.
4.] Installed a 14 housing to lower temps.....fast spoolup [around 1150rpm], but still not fast to peak out. It was very well mannered & manageable towing manners with big sticks.
5.] Installed a Super Stock 62 with 71mm killer wheel....Lights off at 1300rpm, lowered temps to 1200*max towing 15k, reaches peak boost by 1700rpm on a hard fuel, more fun to drive, over 50 psi boost at a throttle blip.
I've been there, done that. I still think that the SS62 is the best turbo for anyone who tows or just wants a great driveable turbo that can handle 125-150hp sticks perfectly. If you want to keep a 64 compressor happy for the street....a 200hp stick is what I'd recommend, but you are missing out. Just my $.02 after a long list of trying, buying & crying. I hope this helps guys.

Yeah....I got alot of busted knuckles for this review. I'm just trying to save you guys time & money. I know how frustrating it is when you are driving & the turbo feels great, but hook up to a trailer & different story. Then get a turbo that tows great, but gets hot egts when playing. I finally found a all around turbo that still to this day puts a smile on my face every time I drive the truck.

Pokapotato- you should be just a compressor change away from J Lent's setup. The custom housing might help too.

But before you do anything try turning the edge off and run the smarty on sw9

I emailed High tech and they said that putting the boost elbow that came with the edge in might help...i dont know if you have already done this but i am gonna try it this weekend. Or if the elbows that come on these turbos is adjustable just crank it in...I havnt checked yet, won't be home until late tonight or tommorrow...ill tell you how it goes

What exhaust housing is on your turbo?
