High Flow "Custom" Air Intakes

I'm looking to build the most efficient air intake for my '96 CTD. I'm currently running a AFE Filter in my stock box. I don't care to spend $300+ on an aftermark plastic set up plus i have a 3" body lift so the tubes will end up short. Anyway what do you guys think is the best way to get "good, clean, COOL" air into my turbo. Anyone have any custom designs they've built. I can'
t go through the headlight (street legal), thinking of a functional hood or bringing the air in from the bumper.. Anyone else ever think of the best way to do this??? My fabrication options are unlimited...

You could always draw air in from the cowl area, i believe one of the scotty intakes used to do this, Here's a link to the printable instructions on this now discontinued product, althoough you could fab something similar. These used to get really good reviews for cool air and lower EGT's. Just an idea.

Yeah the Scotty II drew the air from the stock location and then a 4" hole cut in the cowl. I have thought about fabbing one as well...

Even with a body lift a Air Aid Quick-fit would hook up.

I like the Super BHAF:

Provides enough Cummins-spec airflow & filtration for 2 CTDs...

and has an optional cowl-induction hat that draws from the high-pressure cowl plenum.

... it is a bit loud though - the compressor sounds very unique through it.

We're just waiting for the end of the season next month (down here it's the DHRA HRP Nationals) to package it on one of the 2nd Gens - probably the '99, so it ought to make a nice Christmas present.

nice! Will it have that optional cowl thing? And how does that work, does it draw air from the front or back of the hood?

The Scotty II is the champ for moderate powered trucks. Cowl induction works great on the open road, when you need it anyway. The dyno doesn't do the system justice. I went from a BHAF to the SAII and gained 100°F EGT room on the stock charger. I haven't tested with the S300/BHAF combo.

SAIIs on the rebound.. Wow, that would be good news. I have heard of cracked and broken old SA system getting sold for as-new prices.

That's the plan!

With the stock airbox & ducting out of the way, the flexible air deflector is removed from the passenger side of the CAC, so ambient air has a straight shot at the filter bank.

The cowl induction draws from the high-pressure area where the windshield and hood meet, under the stock hood.
Of course, the SuperBHAF hat can be adapted to a cowl-induction hood as well.

You can see the setup on that page of the website.

Well, I'm still running my prototype PowerCore BHAF with good results.

Well over 1000cfm at only 8" water. 99.9% initial efficiency at 10 micron.

Donaldson rocks

I'm actually considering cutting my hood and doing a ram-air. (with the scoop facing the RIGHT way
