Unhappy Help! Tapped pump wire, now I've got problems.

HI all! I have a problem and need some suggestions! I tapped the wire on my comp today and sometimes on 5x5 it feels like the power comes on very late (Stock hp untill about2400 rpm)and alot less than there should be. (no smoke at all) I noticed it coming back home from town. I got on it good at the light in town and it worked great! 2nd gear rolling start and it smoked pretty good in all gears with great acceleration! Then I got back on it about ten minutes later in fifth at about 55 mph and nothing. Tried accelerating a few more times before I got home with the same result. I got home at checked my wire conn. Pulled on it (vp conn) and it was tight. (I soldered the wire on the pump for a good connection). I did use a spade conn. to add the wire needed to get from the harrness supplied by edge to the Injection pump wire. I soldered them on the wire though and heat shrinked them when I was done so I thought that would provide a good enough connection. At least I thought so?
I took the truck out for another drive after I checked everything and on 5x5 it still fell on its face at a rolling start in 2nd gear. No smoke when I stompted on it and no accelleration. It kind of felt like the comp was messing up again. this is my 2nd one.
The first one would just turn itself off while I was driving. I sent it back to edge and they sent me a new one, that was in about july. I've been running it in ez mode since then with no problems.
Well Anyway, I put it back in 1x5 and I got my acceleration back, it smoked some when I stomped on it too. I worked my back up through the levels back to 5x5 and now it works fine? I played with it for another 15 min by slowing down and accelerating, mean while moving through the levels trying to get it to mess up again and it works fine now.
The only things I can think of are
1. the vp44 is dying
2. the comp is on the fritz again.
3. or maybe the apps.
Oh yeah, fuel psi never drops below 7 psi at wot so I don't think thats it. Checked for codes twice and nothing. Sorry about the long post but what do you guys think? Thanks! Mike

How does it act on 3 or 4? It doesn't sound like a bad connection to me. It sounds like the Comp.

sounds like the comp or VP has issues, even if the wire tap connection was bad it would still feel like it was in EZ mode which is alot of power

In my case the Comp turned out to be bad, they fixed it up and it was great for ever more. This case is odd because it's intermitent and usually all the normal stuff mentioned here is either good or bad, doesn't fluxuate. If your not getting any codes I would also throw in to check your ground on the Comp box. It was sugessted to me a long time ago to ground it straight to the battery. might give it a shot. You don't list a location in your signature but could be moisture problem with the recent weather if grounding is your issue.

Check the ground wire on the Comp. It doesn't do so good hooking it to the grid heater ground. Hook the ground end to the battery and see if it helps. I did this and it worked great for me. I had shudder issues before. JMO.

Thanks for the help guys! I cleaned the ground wire hook up with a wire brush including the negitave battery terminal it was hooked to and it seems to be working now. I really hope thats it. As long as its not the vp44. I can deal with and drive my truck with a bad comp. It still starts really good/quickly to so I'm hoping thats a sign the vp is still ok.

not to pee-pee on your parade but my vp was brand new, started like a champ untill I ran it on 5x5 for about 1/4 of a mile and it dropped dead. Vp's are junk...its almost to the point of making me get rid of my truck. In the last 6 mos I have bought

1 cummis lift pump $140
1 BD pusher pump $250
1 Reman Bosch VP $1100
1 Hot Rod Vp44 $1600

As you can see I am quite upset with my 24v. I bought the HR VP as a last attempt to try and put a "heavy duty" pump that will last in

Been there several times. I never have been able to figure out how I can spend so much time fixing something, not to mention the prevenetive things done and still never have a second thought about gettin rid of it. I spend all my time trying to figure out what to do to it next. If this were any other vehicle I've ever owned it would have been gone long ago.

You guys aren't helping my confidence any.lol Did any of you use conditioner in your fuel? What kind of mods did you have on? I'm starting to wonder if I should take the comp off. (or at least put it back into ez mode) I really like the extra power though. Would a fueling only box be better / give my vp44 a better chance at life?

I came to the conclusion a long time ago reading all these threads about ideas to keep the pump going longer that in the older pumps it was the luck of the draw. If you look at most of the people that have replaced multiple pumps they were using remufactured pumps as the replacements, total luck of the draw there. There have been several improvements made in the pump design and casting since these old ones were built. If you use a brand new pump with the updated electronics as the replacements very few people have had problems with these but they are expensive. I personally went with the Blue Chip Pump. It is new w/the most up to date electronics available and a one year unlimited mileage or mods warranty. I'm sure a few other shops sell this same pump but I didn't talk to any that were as helpful as Chip was. I haven't heard a single complaint about any of his new pumps.
