Help on deciding a turbo?

I would like some help, or some directions to look at as far as turbo wise goes.

I'm in the process of pulling the head, o-ringing it, studs, and 60lb valve springs.
I'm also planning on doing a griddle kit after it gets out of paint.

Here is what I want to do with the truck;
Truck is a Daily driver and I would like to be able to hook to a car trailer and tow around at most 1ton trucks for a trip more than 30 miles.
At most I would have a trailer and a load of ATVs/Dirtbikes.

I would like to hook to the sled acouple times a year just to pull for fun, not competitively.

I want a fast spooling turbo that'll keep the EGTs down.

I plan on upping to New Era 435s when I get the $

So far I'm looking @ the Super Phat Shaft 62 @ 1595.00
Or the Phat Shaft 62 @ 1295.00

Are there any other turbos out there around this amount that will out perform these two turbos? Or are there any cheaper that will set me up?

And yeah, I wanna burn the strokers once in awhile down the road.

Local supplier carrys full line of holesets and garrets but I'm not sure what turbos they offer?

The Super phat shaft turbo is equivelent to a HTT 62/71/14 like I have. The High Tech turbos are cheaper than the Industrial Injection stuff. You could get a HT turbo for $1300.

Got any links to these prices? When I bought my turbo 8 months, HTT's had just gone up before that. Going by PDW prices, they are pretty close to each other. It looks like II charges by Turbine size, whereas HTT charges by Comp size. You're looking at $1600 for a 62/71 regardless of make, atleast through PDW.

I just compared the price of the 2 a few weeks ago, and at the time, the S.P.S. was $100 cheaper than HTT's equivilant.

I've heard rumors but don't know much about a new ATS turbo that has a dual port housing. It apparently has a trap door in the housing which closes to make a small housing for fast spool & opens after boost is present making the housing larger. I was told that it is basically a set of twins in one unit. I would check into this before making a decision.

I've heard the same thing but I haven't heard anyone who has tried it yet.

Jlent, I checked out the 62/71/14 like you have, with the cast iron housing. I'm still not completely sold on those S.S. housings.

That is why you don't see one in my sig, I have never heard of anyone spooling the 13 housing at 1300rpm. I think it is a good idea & probably does work, but not worth the extra cash in my opinion. Just wanted to let you guys know that Advanced Diesel Technology is having a sale on II turbos. 304-864-3399

A Super B turbo from BD was designed to spool at low RPM (1300) and is $1,335.00. That's what i'm running and so is my old man on his 94' 12 valve. It spools quick and mine will run at 45lbs with no problems. The kit comes with a new 4" downpipe to match up with the turbo. You can see their full price list at www.bddieselperformance.com and they're in Diesel Power magazine.
