Heating up

I have a 96 2500 with an auto tranny and the 5.9 cummins. In the past couple of weeks the truck wants to get alittle warm when I'm pushing it alittle hard. If I push it to stay about 70 mpg it will get to around 205 deg. It will come down when I let off and just cruise around 55 then it will run around 190 deg. I'm only pulling a trailer that ways about 2,000lb. I took it to the hills and at around a 6% grade it will get hot with no traile.
How can you tell if the fan clutch is going out. Need any help you can offer. Thanks

My bet is that your radiator is partially clogged. I had a similar issue. The breather bottle design allows oil mist to be recirculated thru the radiator and dirt sticks to it and a clog is the result. I pulled my radiator and power washed it, then I redid my breather like the one in mopar1973man's gallery. Now I have no issues.

I would start with the radiator as rock above states, I would pull the fan and shroud and get some air condition spray on self foaming cleaner available at any a/c supply store, soak it down front cooler, ac, and inbetween, and on the back side of the radiator, Let it soak and work and pressure clean it or hose will suffice. If you pressure wash it be carefull as to not bend the blades. Goodluck,,Rick

The crankcase vent is a big prob on these truck. They sure do dump a lot of oil vapor and oil on the radiator and face of the engine...

A lot of the users here will just dump a hose straight down to the front axle which is fine. But if you do any offroading at all... use the route I took over the top... It will stop all oil spillage on steep descents (30*+)

Pics in my gallery... Several in regards to vent tube design...

Heating up

Just and up date. I pulled the radiator out and what do you think I found.. A plastic shopping bag logged between the radiator's. My guess is that when I was driving the fan would pull the bag up against the radiator and run it hot.. I flushed the radiator and reinstalled. All is going well not.. Thank's for all your help in pointing me in the right direction.. Thank's Mike

On 12 valves the blowby exits a couple feet back from the coolers. Oil on them is a 24 valve problem.
