HE351 Turbos

HE351 Turbos
I've seen a number of threads now where guys are putting HE351 turbos on 1st and 2nd gen trucks. Are there variants of these turbos which don't require an electronic controller?
Thanks,
Mike

What does the solenoid do? Is it some kind of electronic wastegate actuator? Yes it is a electronic wastegate
Also does the CW have an exhaust housing flange that will bolt up to my 2000 exhaust manifold?Yes, however the piping is different on both the exhaust and compressor side.

the solenoid is a on- off boost elbow for a lack of a better explanation. with no voltage applied to it it limits the boost to 20 lbs apply 12 volts to it and it changes it to 32 psi. the plumbing is tricky. i have a very good shop and it took me three days to do. now that i know what i am doing and what parts to buy i think i could do one in about ten hours. it is a good mod for both first and second gen.

I'm in the process of doing the swap now, diesel auto power.com has a lot of good parts for this swap such as a second gen down pipe with the 351 flange on it. There is a few mods you should do to the turbo, such as opening up the waste gate hole and plugging a couple of holes where the solenoid/ plug mounts. I did this with a 10-32 and a 5/16 18 set screws. I made my own solenoid plug and boost elbow. The solenoid threads are 22x1.5 which is the same as a cummins oil pan plug, however I went to a cat dealer and got a drain plug for ease of drilling and tapping for the boost elbow, now you can just use a drain plug and drill and tap the turbo housin, but I chose not to. Either way you have to cut the bolt down to about 3/8. And if you decide to re-clock the turbo for a cleaner look, than you will have to fab a relocation bracket for the waste gate actuator. If you Google he351 retrofit there is a good thread on cummins forum its almost 50 pages
