Thumbs up Happy MBRP install

Got my dual exhaust installed today... Got the alumized MBRP duals.

Wow, 4" exhaust pipe looks BIG in the box!

The install went almost pain-free. This will be a totally honest review, I don't sugar coat anything.

The box arrived pretty beat up, and a couple of the ends on the pipes were flattened slightly, nothing a couple of whacks with a ball-peen couldn't fix.. I can't think of anyway this wouldn't happen other than inside a wooden crate. this is one BIG, HEAVY BOX!!!!!!

The downpipe went on very easily once we figured out exactly HOW in the heck to get it up to the turbo.. extension pipe was next, we trimmed ~2" off that for a good fit per the directions.

The muffler went on like buttah.. the welded-on hangars are GREAT!

We then hung the passenger's pipes, easy enough, especially once we read the directions and used the supplied hangar instead of the factory one.

The driver's side was not as easy. The brake line runs right where the pipe goes through, for starters. We unbolted the brake line frame-bracket and put a 90° bend in the brake line to run it around the front of the pipe. For good measure, we also covered the line with an extra piece of fuel line to protect it..

Then we discovered that the rear part of the pipe is not working out to well. The hangar is located directly UNDER the leaf spring? What the...

We wound up cutting 1.25" off the end of the driver's side forward pipe, which brought the rear pipe inboard more, and let it fit VERY well. I do plan on airbags in the future, and the pipe looks close to where the bags would be. We'll see how close they are.

My biggest gripe? MBRP is a premium exhaust, with a premium price. The use of standard exhaust pipe clamps is very "cheap" IMO, and the better band-style clamps should be included. The included clamps certainly work well enough, but lend an overall cheap look to the setup.

We left everything loose until we had things close.. lining up the 2 outlets wasn't bad, but I wanted to make sure it was perfect.. Tightened everything up, and then installed the 2 FloPro 5" tips. I'm not terribly impressed with the fit of those.. I had to use my I-R impact gun full blast to tighten up the clamp enough to get a secure fit, and if I wiggle, I can still get the tip to move, though it's tight. I would imagine the MBRP tips are of better quality.

OK, wash up, enough looking, let's hear it! What I removed was the stock pipes, with a Summit racing 14" bullet glass pack muffler in place of the cat and muffler.. it was as free-flowing as you'll get with stock pipes, and was previously straight piped. The muffler made no EGT difference.

The MBRP has a deeper tone, sounds darn good so far! Taking it out, there is an increase in volume from 1700-2000rpm inside the cab, but there is NO drone like I even had with my old system.. a welcome change! It's just a bit louder in that range.

OK, she's finally warmed up, time to let it rip.. Lag seems very slightly improved, the sound is GREAT.. very agressive, but again, not overly loud. But oh look! Where I could get to 1350-1400° on a 0-85mph run, it will not budge past 1200° now, it's like someone put a peg at 1200.. Impressive! (And time for more fuel!)

And yes, it's cool as heck to look in the mirror and see smoke swirling from both sides of the truck, converging in the middle. Yeah, I'm a goober like that. And duals on a dually just make my OCD happy.. It just looks right!

All in all, money well spent, and my concerns about limited adjustability on the fit of the pipes because of the welded-on hangars (as opposed to the clamp-on ones in many other kits) is true.. but you don't NEED the adjustments, the MBRP fits!

As for who I got it from.. well, I'm normally good about supporting the vendors and the little guy, but free shipping and 2 free SS tips made this more than $100 cheaper than the next closest vendor, and this guy is in Georgia, so he's almost local.

All in all, 8.5/10. Better clamps would bring it up to 9.5.

Duals on a dually is nice. And 150 degree drop in egt to boot- sounds like a winner to me

Those really look sharp!

Is it just the pic, or is the muffler touching the frame? Also, how close it the drivers side pipe to the fuel tank?

As a generaal rule... don't like duals on a diesel. But that's the first set I've seen on a dually. Really looks like it belongs! Very nice.

Eskimo,

Great write up!!! I have duals on my truck and love'em! By the way if you EVER need any more toys, DPPI as a Sponsor will make sure the price is RIGHT! In fact we have a policy on our site that explains it etc. Have fun!

Sorry for the late reply - was on a big road trip to TX.

Just the pic. Plenty of clearance to the frame.

The driver's pipe doesn't cross the centerline of the truck until it's behind the rear axle, so there's no issue with the tank or the spare tire at all.

Now that I've got some miles on it... WOW

The muffler needed to "break-in" or something... The tone is incredible.. VERY "big truck" sounding below 2000.. 2000-2500 brings a somewhat agressive but NOT obnoxious tone, and 2500+, the truck sounds like it's gonna devour anything in its path and spit out a license plate..

Mind you, all this is outside the truck... Resonance and noise inside is GREAT, much better than you'd expect. Good job MBRP!

I got many compliments from other diesel owners on the trip on the sound, many of them having aftermarket exhausts as well. I can certainly say mine sounds MUCH better than a friend's Magnaflow.

And, I had a need to smoke someone this morning... I could only see 1/2 of her windshield in my mirror..she was CLOSE! I guess she was checking out the pipes.. Previously, people would move left in their lane to avoid the smoke.. Not anymore!! It rolled right down the middle, and there was nowhere to go and hide. She backed off to a normal following distance after that.

On the ground.. but that brings up a good point. When the truck is lifted by the frame, the drivers pipe does contact the leaf spring a little. Forgot about that...

I think I'm having the same problem figuring out how to fit the downpipe. Course I'm working in the dark with a flashlight. Maybe some one could give me some pointers on how to rotate the thing into position.

Did mine, and a few others. No two alike. Just go slow, twist & turn till it slides in. Do remember it took some force to go all the way with a minor indentation resulting in most cases. Helps a lot to have someone on the other end guiding you.

Old thread! Might get better response starting a new one.

When I was trying to install it the night before I was attempting to rotate the tail end of the downpipe toward the passenger side or counter clock wise if your looking from the rear. That is when It would jam between the downpipe mount, the tranny and the frame. Once I removed the rear crossmember support I realized that I can rotate it the oposite direction and it slipped right into position.

The exhaust it really nice. I can't wait to take it for a test drive.
