Awhile back, I did an in-depth
"comparison" of all these turbos on this site in this
section (High Performance/Aftermarket Accessories).
If you will page back you should be able to find it.
It is titled "B-1 vs Piers HX-40".
Hope this helps you some.
Don't let anyone tell you that the b1 is the end-all to egt problems. I have one and I can peg a 1800 degree pyro in about three seconds from a stop. It has not failed yet though, and it has been barked hundreds of times. [undecided]
You also have the Kwikspool housing correct? Of course your temps are going to be higher, with the smaller housing thats the trade off for less lag. Try a regular exhaust housing and you might be surprised.

JR - Kurt gave them to me

Don - Thank you for the clarification. I ignored my own rule of never answering a tech question at 2am. ;D While it may or may not flow 900+cfm on a 5.9 Cummins, the B1 is capable of operating efficiently with this kind of flow being asked for by an engine. To put it in perspective for us 5.9 guys, the B1 is still operating efficiently at 45 - 48 PSI of boost, and thus providing cool, dense, oxygen rich air, while a 40 is out of its efficiency range by somewhere around 36 or 38 PSI, and is now beginning to pump warmer, less dense, less oxygen rich air.

Extreme - By no means did I intend to imply that the B1 is the end all of turbochargers and that you couldn't drive it out of efficient running with enough fuel. I was simply comparing the B1 to HX40 and variants using experience from similar trucks. If you were to put a B1 KwikSpool on a truck with Bully Dog 8's, EGTs would no doubt peg the 1800 mark with ease.

Rod

The original question regarding the HX40.
I run the Piers HX40 with 16cm2 housing.
If you want a great street turbo that can handle your need up into the mid to high 400hp area then the 40/16 will do it, and it is no lag dog, it spools up super fast around 1500 rpm.

Also I run a 95hp rated injector from ATS and an Edge Drag Comp, a BHAF and a Larry Crawford (roger rodbolt) designed aluminum heat sheild.
EGT's are not a problem, I can go WOT and it will hit around 1500-1600 and come down to 1200-1300 under constant WOT, to me these are satisfactory egt's.

The B1 costs more, but it can move more air and I think it is more stout. BTW Larry Crawford and Jetpilot run B1's and are some of the top competitors around.

--Justin

The PDR 40 is a good turbo. Quick spooling. The B-1 moves more air on top. More HP. There ya go!
I have a rebuilt PDR 40 for sale. Its not been run since the overhaul.
Thanks Rod, I will call him some time and see if we can chat.
I think a fair comparison would be Piers new PDR50 vs the B-1 since they are closer in size.

Rod,

2am? Wow you sound like me, except for lately we have been rolling out of bed at 5am and it is getting tougher and tougher to stay up until 2 and get up 3 hours later as the week goes by. Monday, Tuesday ok, Wednesday...gettin tougher....Thursday....Oh boy this hurts...this morning.....I can barely walk :

900 CFM is really a ton of air for a single compressor. My poor little baby HX55 is only good to 850 :'( and its off an 11 litre engine

The B-1 we have been testing with here lately is one tough booger. We have EGT'd the poor thing, boosted it to the moon, barked it hundreds of times and it still hangs in there.

"Cool air" is a relative term I guess. The average discharge temp at 40psi is over 400 degrees @ ambient for most compressor wheels.

Don~
