Guages for Dummies!
Great web site here - learning a lot about my truck that I just love. I keep reading on the need for guages before doing othes mods, couple questions I would appreciate help on. What is needed besides the EGR I have read about, and how do you "read" the guages? What is proper operating ranges? Does one just pull over to lower the temp when its too high? what is too high?
One more folks, if I "behave" myself, do I really need to worry about my auto tranny?

Re:Guages for Dummies!
If you stay here, you are sure to modify your truck and then you will most definitely need gauges. If you don't modify, then don't worry bout EGT's/Boost other than I HIGHLY recommend a Fuel Pressure Gauge, even if it's only a mechanical that you attach to your VP44 on a bi-weekly basis to ensure that your lift pump is healthy.

Roger

Re:Guages for Dummies!
Installed egt probe location has a lot to do with max temp reading. A pryro in the exhaust manifold is quicker to respond than one installed post turbo. The post install reads (measures) anywhere fron 200* to 300* lower than preturbo. Aluminum (pistons) starts to melt at 1350* or so. Please correct me if I am wrong. So, depends on where the probe is installed but I stay far away from 1350*. Temps (EGT) getting to high, means get out of the go peddle. The temperature will drop quickly once you stop fueling.
Seeing as your a 24 valve, a fuel pressure gauge would be wise. A boost gauge and a trans temp gauge if you are an automatic would round out a gaige package nicely.
John
