Cummins rebuild
You can get a Cummins rebuilt for 1000+? WOW that sounds real real real cheap.

There's a reason that the first step in bombing is to get gauges. It's really best to add the gauges before you make any changes - that way, you know what the stock parameters are and establish a baseline to which you can compare as you make modifications.

Guages cost too much...
If I didn't have gauges I would never have known that the Predator Power Chip that I'd installed was allowing my EGT to skyrocket. I pulled it and went with an alternative product.
Wait a couple of paychecks and buy the gauges...

Try $11,000.00 for a rebuild. $10858.56 to be exact.
Start with the exhaust temp gauge unless you want to spend a whole lot more.

WOW, I hope I never melt down .. Was that rebuild with performance parts? I've seen new 5.9 cummins crate motors online going for $5,550 for a 305hp and $6,200 for a 325hp. I spent a long time looking for a good 3.9L for my Jeep and kept coming across the 5.9L. Instead I found a local guy who buys them and rebuild them then sells them again so I'm getting it from him.
I was just curious what all you had done when you had the rebuild for that much.
