Good deal??
Ok guys,
I'm looking at getting a second truck and found the following, curious if it's a good deal or should i look for a 2003 and up?
Super clean
2001, 24v, auto, SRW, 4x4, Long bed, SLT all power, extended cab, infinity sound, 109,000 miles
Ad-ons
front & rear ranch hand bumpers
leveling kit (coils)
looks like bilstein shocks
air bags in rear
hide away goose neck hitch
gauges
mag-hytec tranny pan
BAF
looks like 4" exhaust
nerf bars
debadged
spray in bed liner
What seems strange to me is with all the stuff on it for towing, there's no brake controller?
Anyways, their asking $18,500, is this a good deal or just fair? And is there anything particular I should look for on the 2nd gen's? (2001)

So if I get this 2001, i'm looking at possible injector pump problems, something about a 53 block, what else???
Are these problems very common or just something to look out for? Certainly there are plenty of guys on here running 24v 2001 trucks that like them and have no problems....

Keep lots of fuel going to the VP44, make sure the block isn't cracked, and stay regular with your oil changes in the transmission.
Those are the big things, really. Yea, VP44's and blocks have their issues. The cracking blocks aren't as bad as the VP44's, but both can be replaced/repaired. You can get a new VP44 for about a grand, and if the block cracks you can have it welded.

thats a ton of add on's, for cal that would be a good deal but i dont know how that is for tx. i was told when i got mine to avoid the 01s but i really havent seen any more problems with the 01 then any others.

Thats probably not to unfair for that but look around and see what else you can find theres deals out there you just got to look. I was originally looking at one pretty similar to that except with a man. trans and decided to go with an older 12v for many reasons one being simplicity, not all that electronic crap, I could pick one up for cheap and lose my payment. They all have their problems so the pump and block are just something that could happen with any truck. I wouldnt be to worried about the brake controller, when I bought my ford f-350 it had all the hitches and hookups the guy just liked his brake controller and switched it over when he traded trucks, not a big deal you can pick one up for cheap on ebay or something, i saw a tekonsha voyager which is what I have, new in the box go on there for $15 last week, unfortunatly I had already bought mine.

While the statement itself is false, the logic stands true. Any truck/vehicle is always going to have it's problems that need to be dealt with and tricking yourself into thinking otherwise is a good way to be sorely dissapointed down the road. I now know of quite a few commonrail owners who HATE the new setup because of problems they've had, the injection pump specialty shop that just did my VP44 claimed they have just as many commonrail cummins in there as they do 2nd gen 24/12v's. I think people make too big a deal out of the VP44 in the 2nd gen community.
Personally what made me go for a 2nd gen was the styling, the rumble, and the affordability. I went for a later production trying to avoid a 53 block and also in hopes the fueling system would be good to go, 1 fer 2 is good enough in my books . If you somehow think getting a 3rd gen will cure any and all reliability issues I'd rethink why you are looking into a certain truck.
For the miles/what it has already that doesn't sound like a terrible price, I'd talk them down a bit but if you could get it for ~$15K I think that would be a pretty good deal if it's in good physical shape as well. A lot of the trucks I found from texas were BEAT, scratchs and dents everywhere! but they were cheap
