1) But, even when I have spoken with Kurt on flow #'s he wasn't able to give them to me as he really didn't have any.

2) I have dynoed with 40's and B-1 same dyno and seen almost identical results. In my opinion the B-1 is on par with the 40 for egt control and HP but where it shines is in the durability department.
1) I finally got mad at Kurt one day, and made him get me the numbers He's working on drive pressure results. He had them at one time, but lost the numbers. He's got the external wastegate functioning now, so we'll be able to get different numbers.

2) This is why I heavily distrust intertial dynos, and Mustangs appear to be very prone to operator error. In every case where we've replaced an HX40, EGTs and smoke were down, and load-test HP was up (in most cases we were running around 50 PSI of boost). So in my opinion, the B1 is way out of the HX40s class (which stops making power by 40 PSI). You also have to keep in mind that EGT readings on a dyno are virtually worthless. You have no airflow getting under the hood, just the superheated air under the hood.

Rod

Rod,

You are correct in dyno #'s are a different animal than real world driving. But dyno's are the only true way to get a direct comparison of mods done. Some things are designed to work "on the road" and example would be the Scotty setup. On a dyno nobody would see any difference but hook on a load and it will shine.

Also boost pressure is not an indication of power. Although when there is excess fuel and good drive pressure an engine will produce more HP with more boost. I was one of the first guys to use a B-1 and it is a good turbo. But with all I have seen in relationship to this charger I bet we will find that max HP with lowest egt's will be around 40 psi of boost. Above this # drive pressures are killing the performance of it.

As for egt's of the B-1 vs. HX-40 my experience in this area is with the PDR-40 and egt's were almost identical. For max HP I do not feel the B-1 will outperform a PDR-40, same can be said about egt control. But as I stated earlier the B-1 is dang tough and it would be hard to find a charger that can outlive it in the abuse area.

Doug

Cumminsdieselboy,

I noticed you live pretty close to me. there is a wonderful dyno shop near me that loves the diesels. So once all the upgrades are complete if you want to check out RWHP and Torque they can accomodate you. They are one of the few shops arounfd that has the software to actually read torque #'s up to 3000 lbs. If you need help with any of your installs or tuning let me know I would be happy to assist.

Doug

As much as I hate mustang dynos if I am off work I am going to attend. The mustangs have a real traction problem with out trucks. Sometimes strapping the truck rear end down both forwards and rearwards helps :-[.

Doug

But I don't think you're giving the B1 enough credit on the horsepower side. One of our tests this year will be on my 03. We're going to wastegate a hybrid 40 (little weaker bottom end than a PDR, but better mid and top), a K.45, and a B1B SuperKwikSpool. At lower fueling levels (Not letting the B1 exceed 50 PSI), we're seeing about 40 more ponies out of the B1 and K.45s than we are out of the 40. When we've wasted the B1 and K.45, then poured the fuel to it, I think we'll be seeing in excess of 60 more ponies out of the B1.

Rod

Rod,

None of this is a slam on the B-1 it is just that this has been my experience. I have a ton of dynoing with the B-1 and a limited amount of time dynoing with different 40's and I am basing my answers on this. My experience has been as mentioned above the B-1 and 40's produce equal top end HP. The PDR-40 actually has a better bottom end than the B-1. The B-1 though is the most durable mid size turbo I am aware of.

Doug

I just don't think that your comparison is valid. I assume that the HX40s you were using were wasted out somewhere in their efficiency zone (they'd have to be, otherwise they'd be pieces under the truck ), whereas the B1 was driven out of its efficiency zone. As such, an accurate HP number for the B1 was never found. I suspect in your case if you had reduced fueling to the point where the B1 was somewhere in its efficiency range, you would have seen more HP and lower EGTs than you would have with an HX40 at that same fueling level.

Rod

Re:Gonna get my Hx-40, Step 4 Bully, and AfE Megacannon!!!!!

Rod, I'll call Heberam and let you know later which B1 he tried.

There is a trick to help traction which can be used when running high hp trucks on a Mustang dyno. Edge uses it and has had some 600+ hp readings. Instead of using both rollers they strap the truck down with the tires resting on top of the rear roller, simular to a Dynojet. Physics says this method should work (putting more weight to a small surface is better than less weight on a larger surface), and except for the example of drag slicks, it actually does. One big limitation in using the Mustang, however, is road speed. I believe Edge doesn't like to take their dyno above 100 mph.
