Gonna get my Hx-40, Step 4 Bully, and AfE Megacannon!!!!!

Re:Gonna get my Hx-40, Step 4 Bully, and AfE Megacannon!!!!!
There have lots of trucks which have got over 500 hp with the HX40. As an example, a couple of years ago HVAC was running over 600 hp with one. They used to be the HOT ticket. Also there have been plenty of 450 hp trucks running a HX35.

As for beating the Ford, you shouldn't have too many problems. In all the dyno meets I've attended there have been only 4 Fords over 400 hp, and 2 of them were running 12v Cummins. The other 2 were MADDOG at a little over 600 (he's the highest hp PSD I've heard of and has since converted to 12v power), and Bully Dog's old '01 at around 500.

Fords cleaned house at the May Maddness '01 drags, but there wasn't one Dodge with over 320 hp in attendance that year. All the higher hp Dodge boys stayed away and the Fords were all heavily BOMBd.

Why would you want a megacannon just for looks if you are building a truck for function wouldn't you want the best functioning air intake system? We have all seen it hell I switched from a megacannon to a scotty without changing any other variables and say a 200 degree EGT reduction thats real world reduction a dyno doesn't always tell the truth about the real world.

I know quite a few with similiar mods and none over 500hp. I think that you would have to stack an EZ or VA with a TST3 to achieve that. Just my opinion.
[/quote]

Yes it can be done. However reliabilty creeps up in the back of your mind when your 500+hp on an HX40, PDR HX40 would be the best option but even it is vulnerable at those levels and higher which is why he developed the PDR HX50/55.

Piers builds one heck of a 40. I think its the best 40 on the market, but its still only an HX40, and as such, the 500 ponies are going to come at the expense of some smokin' EGTs. I'd opt for something larger such as a B1, K.45, HX50 or twins when looking for 450 HP+

Rod

Re:Gonna get my Hx-40, Step 4 Bully, and AfE Megacannon!!!!!
Heberam (Steve Covalt) has been testing the PDR HX50 for a while now. I've talked to him a couple of times about how it is doing. I believe he's on the second one Piers has sent, which is better than the original.

It's a great turbo for a high hp truck. It has a Borg Warner exhaust housing which in not waste gated. Steve is working on an external waste gate for his, because the boost comes on so fast. He's afraid of blowing a head gasket because he has to constantly keep his eye on the boost guage (he runs nitros). One big problem for these high performance turbos have is blowing the rubber intercooler hoses. Usually the a section of the hose is pulled right out from underneath the clamp.

Steve lives in Heber City, which is over 5000 ft in elevation, and has tried the B1, which is useless for high elevations because of turbo lag. The PDR HX50 works good at elevation, hits 50 psi with much less lag even in the mountains, and is several hundred dollars cheaper than the B1. He doesn't recommend it for towing, however.

Why doesn't he recommend it for towing? I dont tow anything now but I may later on. May end up towing my buddy's drag car. How much max boost is it capable of handling? Is the lag comparable to say an HX35? Or more like a PDR-HX40?

Re:Gonna get my Hx-40, Step 4 Bully, and AfE Megacannon!!!!!
BigBlue,

As with all big singles towing is not recommended. The rpms and fuel required to spool these turbos is above what our engines are designed for. This means high egt's while towing. According to Piers the HX-50 boost should be limited to 55 psi. Over this and there is significant wear on the charger. Remember though that big boost #'s don't always equate into big HP or lower egt's. The trick is to find the charger that is the most efficient for your setup. A good example is an HX-35 making 45 psi will not outperform a HX-40 limited to below 40 psi.

I am quite confident that the lag is greater than a HX35 or the PDR-40. This charger is quite a bit larger so hence the increase in lag.

Doug

Re:Gonna get my Hx-40, Step 4 Bully, and AfE Megacannon!!!!!
Piers' HX50 was not built for towing, but rather for performance for raceing/pulling. He still favors the HX40 for towing, and many agree that it's the "best turbo for towing on the market". I know someone who has one with a 18 housing, and says it won't spool untill 1800RPM, and he has DD Drug Pushers, and PLENTY of fuel.

If it were my truck, and i was getting the mods listed, I would go with the PDR40 also.
