Goerend Trans Update

Well I've got just about 40,000 flawless, smile-filled miles on my Goerend and finally had a hickup. I went to leave my house the other day and I went into drive and there was nothing so I gave it a little bit of throttle and it locked inot gear. I figured it was somehow an air pocket in the fluid so I checked the fluid and all was well. So I go to head home from the girlfriend's and put it into drive and absolutely nothing. It's like it was still in neutral. Reverse was still very strong so I checked the fluid and shift linkage and it was all good. This was a Sunday so I called Dave and left him a message and he called me back at 8:30 on Monday morning. We figured out it is most likely the rear clutch pack (or drum?) that has failed so he shipped one up to me. I'll be installing it on Sunday. All things considered: Yes the truck is inonperable, yes I have to yank the tranny out of it, but in reality it's nice to know that I've got parts waiting for me when I get home (down at college right now... thank God it happened at home!) and the tranny will be good to go again.

I just thought folks would like an update on things... I know Dave is a great guy and so are his trannies, but it does help to hear the whole story about things.

Thanks Dave for helping me out, it's nice to know the tranny is covered like this!

true that! dave is great

my transmission won't do anything if I put it into drive or reverse right after startup, but if I let it sit in neutral or park for 10-20 second I goes right in. Dave told me this is because I removed the checkvalve in the line that normally prevents converter drainback.

this is where i like to point out to folks about trannys and their warranties...this seems just great to some, then again to others it wouldnt be..unless you can tear an auto down and build it yourself, what would this do for you?you would have an option to either pay a shop here to install the clutch pack,or you could box up your tranny and ship it back to him to fix.either way you are gonna be out several hundred dollars..the cost of a set of clutches is nothing anyway,so thats no big saving there.......my point is this though, when you decide to get your tranny built, unless you can do it yourself, you better find a builder close enough to you that when something happens(and it will, with anybodys, sooner or later),you can get it to them for repairs.....im not knocking anybodys trannys here, this applies to all of them.just trying to save some folks some headaches.....bama

The rear clutch went out on mine about 5k after is installed daves vb and tc, and jammer 5's after talking a bit with them about what failed dave sent me a new clutch pack for the front and rear clutch no charge. I installed the parts and still had the same problem, talked more with dave..he concluded the drum seals were shot...he sent me an input shaft assembly with new drum seals at no cost...just freighted mine back, he is by far the best customer service oriented vendor i have ever dealt with....bad thing was i had to take the tranny out twice to fix it and now looking back i should have taken the time to rebuild the whole thing

I just pulled the tranny on Sunday, looked at the rear clutch pack and sure enough it was fried. Dave called me on Saturday just to check up and see how things were coming and I told him I would be doing the work on Easter Sunday and he gave me his cell phone number and said no problem, just give me a call if you have any questions or problems. Outstanding there, I know I wouldn't want to worry about work on Easter! I felt bad calling him when I dropped something out of the valve body but he acted like it was nothing!

Good Point Bama, and I know you're not knocking anybody, but I would like to point out that Dave first asked if I could get the truck to him (he would do all the work), and I requested to do it myself just because I don't have access to a trailer to haul it 5 hours away. He also said if this doesn't fix it and I need it right away he'd just send a pre-built tranny. Definitely helps to have a local builder!
