Geno's Dipstick Temp Sender?

Anyone ever tried one of these? Got my a-pillar pod and guages for X-mas and want to add a tranny temp guage in dash. Just wondering if anyone has tried one of these temp senders for their tranny and how it worked?

They work and are better than nothing but not great because they only measure the lowest temp in the system, the pan.
To me this is like measuring your engine coolant in the overflow bottle.
Most folks prefer the sensor in the output line to the cooler, the hottest fluid in the system.

Okay, nother stupid question, what size tranny cooler lines does the truck have? I like the inline block pre-tapped for a sender, but there are two offered of differing sizes.

The inline block assembly that many gauge manufacturers supply won't work because they are intended for 5/16" or 3/8" tranny lines......CTD's use 1/2" tranny cooler lines.

However, it is simple enough to make your own with a 1/2" pipe tee and some compression fittings.

I use Geno's dipstick sensor. It works great!!!! Although, it's measuring the pan tempature (a lot cooler). I think its better than nothing.

how much cooler, at what temp are you saying uh oh? if not getting the hottest? Just curious as I am looking at getting trans gauge before Feb. and not sure which way to go. Is it 50 degrees colder? less? More? does anyone know?

Thanks.

If you aren't going to put your sender in the hot line, then don't waste your money on a gauge. If you are reading the temp in the pan, by the time that gauge reads hot, the damage has already been done.

Why waste your money on something that is not even going to tell you what you need to know?

You wouldn't buy an outside thermometer and leave it in the house expecting to get accurate outside temperatures would you? Of course not, your AC or heat will be effecting the temperature in your home, making it different from the outside temp.

Yet that is essentially what you are doing if your sender is in the pan, reading fluid temp that has already been mixed with fluid from the cooler.

Thanks, that answers my question. Figured someone would give it to me straight. Will likely buy double deep pan tapped already.

Thanks again for response.

You'll still be measuring the the coldest fluid in the system using the tapped hole in a new pan. If you want to measure the coldest fluid might as well use the dipstick probe.

so where exactly are we recommending tapping into?

When speaking with different vendors, was being told to tap the pan?

The "hot" line is the one on the way out to the cooler. This way you are reading from the absolute hottest part of the process. The pan is average of what, 12 quarts?

Anybody have pictures of the inline tap? I know there's like a $150 part from Dodge that replaces the line with a line that has the tap in it (right?). BigBlue told me that's what he did cause he didn't think it was worth it to splice into the line.
