Gauges: Boost, Fuel Pressure, EGT

So as you all know, fuel pressure is very important for us 24valvers and since I was doing that, and maybe an edge box down the road I decided to throw in a EGT gauge

Oh and sinec a 60PSI boost gauge looks kinda nifty I thought I would add that too... so here goes, pictures, part numbers and install proceedures as far as I am right now.

I dont currently have the truck with me, I blew up the tranny and I should hopefully have it back tomorrow

For boost I went with nothing fancy, just the plain jane Autometer Z series #2617 0-60PSI

The gauge hook up is simple thanks to a nice 3/4" npt port on the intake manifold... I decided to go with a little different setup cause i HATE the **** autometer boost straws... so of course I bought some 1/4" ID air hose good to... 250 PSI

They didnt have a 3/4" NPT - 1/8" NPT adapter so I had to go in steps 3/4 - 1/2 | 1/2 - 1/4 | 1/4 - 1/8 and finally stick a 1/8" NPT 1/4" barb fitting on the end... I plan to make this again with higher quality parts because these hardware store fittings, while they may get the job done, they look like hell and are horrible quality.

Teflon tape is of course always a must.

Next is an autometer ELECTRIC Fuel Pressure gauge. I went with this because I dont have to run fuel or coolant filled lines into my cabin, which is fine by me! If my boost gauge line springs a leak, big frickin deal... if diesel or coolant flow into my cabin I'm going to be ******! Once again, this is an Autometer Z series. Part number 2661. BTW, if you use the Green caps, I dont think the light will bother you, and it should look like the stock gauges with black faces and orage pointers.

Here is what I did for the line:
On the 99 trucks there is a 1/8" NPT port in the top of the filter housing, I'm not sure what all years have this so hopefully someone will chime in and fill the information I lack. Anyway I use a 1/8" NPT - -4an fitting, with a 90* - straight 18" brake hose. Both ends of the hose use -4an female fittings. On the sender end, I use another -4an - 1/8NPT fitting feeding into a 1/8" NPT female/female union with the 1/8" NPT sender. Why did I spend all that money on stupid fittings when the sender is 1/8" NPT and so is the port in the fuel filter housing? I'm not entirely sure but I know I had a good reason for it at the time.

the 90* end goes to the filter housing, please note that the 1/8NPT male/ -4AN male fitting is not shown since I have to install it on the truck, then the line onto the fitting.

And finally EGT... #1 I dont like autometer EGT probes, and #2 I think this gauge looks bad ***.

This gauge is an ISSPRO R3607TR EV (enhanced visibility) pyrometer, and its color coded which I think is really neat =)

I dont have anything on this yet but most likely I will be taking my exaust manifold off, inspecting it for cracks, drilling a hole and welding a propper EGT bung onto it.

I will take pics of it all as I get closer to installation including how I wire it all up and what the final product looks like...

Happy modding!

Looks good. I'm in the process of doing gauges myself right now. I'm still waiting for my boost and fp guages to arrive. I sent back my intial autometer boost guage for the 0-60 psi version and ordered an ISSPro 0-30 psi mechanical fuel pressure gauge. I just have a personal preference toward mechanical gauges and the cost is easier to swallow. So anyhow, all I have right now to work on is the Pyrometer. My manifold was already tapped for the probe by the previous owner so now I just need to track down the right adapter fitting to mount it up. I'm also ordering the hollow bolt from Piers to mount up my Boost gauge to when it gets here.

Where are you mounting your gauges inside the cab? Since my boost and EGT gauges are Autometer Ultralites, I'm mounting them in a a-pillar pod. The fp guage is a black-faced IssPro so I'm going to mount it in the cubby hole next to the stereo on the dash. I'm thinking that should keep the interior looking clean and uncluttered.

Are you going to get a tranny temp gauge? Might be a good idea with the auto.

all three will go in an A pod Boost, FP and egt in that order

I just got my truck back today, hopefully I will get my EGT soon and get started.

I dont really want to tap the manifold because im a little worried about metal shavings turning my turbo into a grenade. I'll probably just take it off if I can and go from there.

Speaking of boost gauges, what gauge should the small time guys run? I just have the stock H1C w/ 18cm housing, and will be getting around 200hp from pump work currently being done. I might, if I can find a smokin' deal, install a 16cm housing. I shouldn't need anything over 30psi, should I?

I went with the 60 cause I hope to max out a 30 soon... I'll never run anything near 60 and it may be quite a while before I hit 30

I went 60 just in case

Autometer does make a 0-30 Z series, they also make a personal favorite of mine vacuum/bloost - 30 psi gauge

personally I love vac/boost gauges

Royta:

I ran a 35# Autometer sport-comp gauge set in my 93 with out maxing it out. My 93 had the pump maxed out and a 12cm housing with the wastegate unhooked, I only got around 28 psi on that setup.

I think a 35 pounder otta do it. If you go with POD injectors though, you may need 50.

I thought I would attach a photo of the gauges I had in the 93.

Isspro does have a 40 psi boost gauge in the EV line.

I guess in the ISSPRO world, the manifold and boost pressures are different things

I am using westech gauges. I only have Fuel PSI, and Oil PSI installed currently. The Westech Boost/EGT and the dual temp. gauges are on their way.

Just installed Autometer 0-60 boost guage and a pyro. Both ultralite. I too was worried about drilling and tapping the manifold for the pyro probe. The way i was told to do it was to drill and tap it with the engine running. It blows the chips out from the exhaust pressure. Worked well for me,turbo works fine and i didn't have to go through removing the turbo. Total time for drilling and tapping was about 15 min.

I have heard the whole drill/tap while running thing and it should work but I dont really want to open up my exaust while I thrust a drill into it

Change of plans on the EGT gauge... it will now be an ISSPRO 3607VWR

Slightly different color band placement

Should get that wednesday and hopefully have it installed by the end of the week with happy pictures and everything

Looks good except for the Teflon tape. Tape is great for water pipes but really has no place in a vehicle. Not only does it break down with oil and high temps but if you ever have to take something apart it's near impossible to remove the tape debris from female fittings without contaminating the system.
You're better off using Permatex #2 on threaded fittings.
