it could be a number of things the easiest would be to check if the hose going to the gauge is against the dash or any thing else any were. my gauge does this every now and then to fix it I reach under the dash move stuff around and viola problem solved for a few months. some people have installed a needle valve in the line to solve the problem.

Do you have a snubber/needle valve installed? If not this will fix your issue. I get the rattle about once a year and open the hood and close the valve all the way and then open it back up maybe an 1/8'th of a turn. Noise gone.

Cheep and easy, parts at NAPA or the like.

Good luck.

Check for leaks too. Does the gauge flutter?

Snubber valve, a needle valve did nothing for me, O and PureDieselPower has one for under $5, unlike diesel manors which is super $$$

Why not just use a gauge snubber? I used one for my mechanical boost gauge with -4 AN stainless braided boost line because my needle was bouncing. It worked perfect.

And if the needle is in deed fluttering, what would the cause be?

Pulsing from the VP. A needle valve is the cheapest solution.

I have braided line, too.

What worked for me was ditching my crappy Hewitt gauge for a much nicer $20 jeg's liquid-filled 1.5" gauge that's all mechanical.

Perfect and cheap, and no noise.

So if you get a liquid filled gauge you won't hear the pulsing sounds through the gauge?

Funny you say that because my needle valve is now leaking a tiny bit and I was actually thinking about getting the snubber from DieselManor. I ended up not getting it anyway because the shipping would cost too much on such a small part.
