fuel pressure gauge question
What's the problem with running an uninterupted fuel pressure line thru the firewall to a cab mounted mechanical/hydrolic pressure gauge?

SAFETY. There are 2 issues that could lead to pumping diesel fuel into your cab. First, in the event that the fuel line/hose broke or failed - either from years of normal use or in an accident. Second, some of the guage manufacturers state that their guages are not designed to be chemicaly compatible with diesel.

ok, thanks. That's kinda what I figured. Truth is I suspect, in case of fire , I could idle the lift pump, pull the fuel pressure tubing off the gauge and put the fire out with the now awsome 16 psi fuel injected extingisher hose!
Can't blame 'em tho for covering their liable *** ets. no doubt the lawyers got the parinoid seed of no accountability planted deep and well fertilized. To bad. I noticed most kits didnt supply oil line to connect with! Good legal back door!
I,d much rather deal with an oil line/oil fire than a plastic fed inferno! better remove the interior. Is an air bag fireproofed before it is introduced into the cab to engulf the occupant within? Sorry, Sean S got me going on the marketing motives and intentions of component manufacturing and design. I go off on the "system " once in awhile, which in MHO needs to be recalled and reworked. I'm done, apologiies one and all.
10HAAP, any idea which gauges [companies] claim compatability problems in their relationships with Dfuel? STY

I've had mine setup that way with a schrader valve stainless braided hose and a autometer boost gauge for a few months now with no problems. The simplicity appealed to me after experimenting with some digital gauges.

Yeh, I think I'll sign off on the waiver of liability and go direct ,better more dependable read.
CU 4life-did you mean you used autometer fuel pres. gauge and it is compatible?
Billg piped an auto store pres. gauge [I assume standard air gauge] under the hood and reported that it filled up with oil and became a leaker. I've used a few different liquid filled gauges before in other applications with no problems. I was thinking of using isspro fpg just because matching what I have on the pillar.

rangerst,
I have Di Pricol guages and was told their Fuel guage needs an isolater. That point is imbedded in my mind, because I ordered the set from Geno's a year ago and was told the isolator was on backorder pending re-design. I didn't want to wait and asked if I could go direct. They said the guage was not designed for diesel. Anyway I finally got the isolator last fall and everything is installed and working fine. I think the Di Pricol guages match the '95 thru '02 factory guages the best.

I installed my Isspro mechanical gauge with a stainless steel braided line (and no isolator) on top of my dashboard over 3 years ago.
I haven't had a single drip since it was installed.
I purchased the whole kit & kaboodle from Rod at www.wildcatdiesel.com
Use top quality parts, and you get a top quality job.
Check my gallery pics.

Thanks 10HAAP, chalk that one off for direct connect!
Shovelhead, your pics look like your gauges are mounted in stand off bullet type housings, right? Not fimiliar with this ss braided tubing , did you bend a90 behind the gauge or use an elbo? Did you go thru radio hole or glove box for access? did you drill dash holes bottom up or top down? How much braided line, 3,4,5,6 feet?
thanks for al the Q & A and now I lernt to even spell KABOODLE !
CU4life , that sure is novel idea with the booster plumbed up, thanks.
My new LP installed by dodge to get new motor running tested at dealers at 9 psi full throttle, does this seem low for new or ok? The old LP tested at 1psi according to dealer. I'm eyeballin' the vp44 pretty heavy for down stream effects!

Yup, I pulled the instrument cluster, the radio, & the cubby-hole and it gave me just enough room to squeeze my hands in to run the lines and wires. As for the length, Rod asked where I was putting the gauge and sent me a pre-made line that was the perfect length,(I didn't think to measure it.)
All holes were drilled from the top down by using my air-powered 90* die-grinder with a short drill bit in the chuck.
The larger hole for the fuel line was made by drilling many smaller holes around the perimiter and "connecting the dots".
I used a layer of masking tape on the dash to mark the holes before drilling.
I haven't seen another setup like mine (yet).
It took awhile to get up the courage to start drilling 11 holes in the dash of my 1 year old truck.

If you install a $4 needle valve at the head of the line and run it almost closed not only will it eliminate gauge pulsations but in the unlikely event you have a leak it will be little more than a slow drip that you can stop by shutting the valve.
I've been working with all manner of pressure gauges for over forty years and have never once run into one that is incompatible with diesel. I think what the manufacturers are really saying is that their gauges aren't compatible with the vibrations and fuel pressure pulsations on a diesel engine.
