Question Fuel Mileage & Performance Exhaust

I'm new to this site, so hello all of you!

I was looking for diesel light truck discussion boards last night & found this site - looks pretty awesome. My question to you is this, aside from HP & torque gains, & lower exhaust temps, what improvements have you noticed in fuel mileage gains after installing a performance exhaust system on your Dodges?

Also, did your truck come with a catalytic converter from the factory? I believe we'll find different OE systems for same year trucks - running changes & California exhaust on non-California vehicles.

Looking forward to your replies! -Eric

Welcome, If Possible, fill out your "Signature" on the bottom of the page so we know what year, trans type, etc... truck you have (it helps). As for the 4" exhaust, helps w/ EGT's and gives a bit of extra power...as for gas mileage, i personally didn't really notice a gain. As for catalytic converters, my truck did not come with one...not sure about the Cali trucks but I don't think so (at least for the older trucks like mine)

Welcome to the site!

As barracuda mentioned, please fill out yor sig so that we all know what your truck is. FWIW, if you are referring to 2nd gen CTD's, all 94 - 98 12v CTD's came factory equipped with a cat with the exception of 94 models manufactured before Jan. 1/94. All 98.5 - 2002 24v CTD's did not come factory equipped with a cat but did have a resonator in place of it.

As for performance gains with 4" exhaust, you won't feel much difference....if any gains were to be had, they would be minor......the real power gains come from additional fueling.....the 4" exhaust just helps support the extra fueling by keeping egt's down. I have not experienced any mileage gains from 4" exhaust either.

I don't personally own a Dodge diesel, but I'm very involved with diesel truck exhaust - mostly the big rig type (class 7 & 8's).

My truck is a '96 Dodge Ram 1500 gas, & a few old Mopar cars.

Go with an X-pipe setup and a free-flow muffler like a Borla or Dynomax Super Turbo.

Gas exhaust design theory is MUCH different than turbodiesel design.
