Freshly rebuild trans, boost question
A couple weeks ago I got my truck back from a fresh trans. rebuild with goerend parts and low stall triple disc torque converter .
I had read before the rebuild that the lower stall TC would create some turbo lag. I guess it's a little worse than I thought it would be. Before the rebuild the PS62/12 seemed to spool almost as well as the stock turbo. The trans was real loose, now it's real tight. I've been running Smarty on level 3 with 150hp sticks and I really have to ease into the throttle if I don't want to smoke A LOT. Higher levels of the Smarty make it more difficult to not smoke. Once the rpms get up the smoke seems to clear pretty good.
My question is if I added a wire tap box (Quad 120 hp box), will that just create more smoke down low or will the turbo actually start to spool a bit sooner. I figure some of you guys have a setup similar to mine...I'd like to hear your experiences.
Thanks
Brad

Too tight of a converter, ask Dave to switch it to something that doesn't bog it down off the line.
Your gearing and tire size are contributing too. But you should look at what you just changed. More fuel will just make it smoke more.

Bamadzl; I just had Dave put a tranny and convertor in my truck last week and I'm experiencing the very same thing. Never thought it would be the tranny change , I actually thought I had something else going wrong. If you figure anything out other than a looser convertor let me know Please. I'm not interested in a convertor change , if it's not necessary! My truck is stock and the tranny made a world of a difference , I had Goerend build me the standard tow'er. Thanks ! Ebert

I'm not exactly sure what the stall is. It had 900/400 written on the TC when I got it, if that means anything. I didn't use the Goerend VB either. My trans guy used a Transgo kit and spoke with Dave about how to set it up. I don't know if the VB would make a difference. Mine holds 1st gear to a pretty high rpm which actually helps, it's just different from the stock setup. Maybe it will just take me a while to get used to it.
65dragnet, I'm not really interested in a converter change either. The thing is great once it gets moving. I towed my boat last weekend and I couldn't even tell it was back there. The old trans would shift all the time going up and down hills on the way to the lake. I can go whatever speed I like and the thing never comes out of lockup.
Like I said before, the only problem I have is giving it too much fuel from a stop or a slow roll. Looks like I'll just live with it...it's not really a big deal. Just thought I'd get some other opinions.

65dragnet, did you bump your timing at all? A tighter converter will mandate more timing on the 12V motor, otherwise it would be miserable to drive, especially stock.

Try sw1 or even sw0 for less fuel down low. Personally I think sw3 is pretty clean with low rpms and light/ moderate throttle. With sw0 you'll probably be flooring it all the time, but with mine it won't make dark smoke.
I never thought I'd hear people complaining about spool with 5's and a 62/12, but I like to do the shifting =P

converter sounds too tight.... maybe swaping out the jammers for something smaller to match the rest of your truck...just a thought smaller sticks and a fueling box might be what will clear this up..
