id say back off a little. when I barely touch my petal it goes up to about 2k in neutral, but it doesn't hang up. its hard to hold it at a specific rpm below 2k in neutral.

also I noticed it shifts a lot softer under normal acceleration, could this be because the TPS isn't moving as much and the trans is thinking there isn't much throttle being applied?

Yeah, I'm familiar w/ that rod... stupid pop on ends kept popping off the pump until I smacked em w/ a hammer!
Wouldn't shortening the rod affect full throttle? Would it result in the engine not getting full fuel? If that's not the case, I'm heading to the garage tonight to get 'er lined out!

When installing the washers, I thought I was careful to put things back to the original positions.

I'm thinking I need to either add a click or two, or back off same amount. Any suggestions?

back off a click or 2

I did the same thing, the 1/2" washers are too large in diameter(OD), and gets caught on the idle spring. That's why Gunracer was saying to use the 3/8", it's closer to the correct diameter(OD). Although, you can grind the 1/2" washer to a smaller diameter so it wont bind up, but it's a lot of work.

that is why i used the 3/8th washer at first. but i did have luck finding 1/2 washers in the right size to fit inside the idle spring.

Of the three springs in there, which one does what? Is the large outer one the idle spring? If so what do the next two do?

I had a set of stock springs available (from the Piers 3kgsk installation on my 95) so I was able to check the washers fit to the inner spring. It was almost a perfect match for the od of the larger inner spring.

One concern I had while installing the washers was that if the washer didn't stay centered, it could shift over and interfer with the idle spring.

I'm gonna loosen both springs 2 clicks later today, will report.

Thanks, RR

How could it not stay centered the hole of the washer should go on the part of the retainer that sticks out.

I did the work from the top and didn't check the diameter of the retainer stud, I suspect there's a bit of slop between the hole in the washer and the retainer. Hopefully not enough to cause problems. We'll see.

the retainer has a protrusion that is just a bit smaller than 1/2". the washer cannot be bigger than 1.00"s on the out side diameter. a little smaller is better.

How's this? I'll edit a little as time goes on to refine it.

nevrenufhp, excellent write-up. I tip my hat to you.

My saga however continues. I backed off two clicks today, it was better, no rpm hang up, but I lost a couple of hundred idle rpm (dropped too 500 or so) and it was very rough around 2k and idle down was a bit delayed. Raise idle with adjustment stud, still not acceptable.

So I reduce another click. Now it's hanging up at anything above 2k.

Here's where it gets good. I decide to pull it back down and try the 3/8th washers, now a guy has shown up to look at the 98 I'm selling, we're talking, I'm working, he's watching and asking questions, I've got the nut and retainer out, go back in to get the washer, and then,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I don't have the washer on the stick magnet. Didn't see it fall, musta blinked, it's gone. Get the suction gun out, pull all the oil I can out of the pump, see nothing. Fish around with the magnet for a good long while ,,,,,,,,,, nothing. Go into the house, watch Texas Ranch House. Man, that's a whiney bunch on that PBS show.

Suggestions?

Very nice.

I have a question, is the 12 valve stumble generally always the springs? I had a VERY slight stumble with stock 180 injectors, I then added 370's and the stumble is terrible, I changed the timing and it improved but marginally? Any idea's??

Id say find that washer first. then get some washers that are smaller in diameter, I think your washers might be getting hung up on the big outer spring. they shouldn't touch the outer one at all.
