Fleetgaurd marine BHAF install

My marine BHAF finally showed up at the Cummins dealer today.... I ordered it about 2.5 weeks ago. Anyway, it's certainly nothing new, but I thought I toss up a pic anyway.

I used the heat shield template found elsewhere on this site to fab the heat shield out of 1/8" aluminum plate. The template fits pretty good with a couple of exceptions. I found one of the 3 mounting hole locations to be off about .25" and in another spot, my heat shield contacts one of the aluminum A/C lines. I've got them isolated with a split piece of hose right now, but I plan to remove the heat shield and remove some material to clear the hard line.

I used somebody's idea I saw posted here to use the mounting nuts from the stock air box to fasten down the heat shield. I'm not happy with how it worked out.... they allow the HS to flop around too much. I'm going to replace the stock nuts with rubber grommets (to fill up the 3/4" hole) and just use some 10mm nuts on the studs. Right now the filter is just setting on the heat shield but I plan to add some pieces of angle to the HS and fab up some kind of hold down to strap the filter in place.

Forgot to mention.... I noticed very little difference in the amount of "turbo whistle" but I can now hear the "airbox thump" phenomenon.

Do you guys think its a good idea to get the BHAF or the Scotty II for my truck. I am not towing with it, or hauling anything heavy at all, it will be empty most of the time. I just want the most airflow so my engine breathes easiest and also the cleanest air possible. Should I go with the BHAF or Scotty II for this?

The airbox thump is sort of like someone put a subwoofer in the airbox. Low frequency wop sound from the airbox or right front fender every revolution of ingine. See thread
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=44916

I am thinking my airbox and fender are mplifying this sound, so I will be getting a BHAF soon.

gamiller,
I never notice or heard the "thump" UNTIL I put the BHAF on.... I don't think the BHAF is going to make it go away.

The only way to get BOTH super clean air AND the most airflow is to have a huge filter.

THe BHAF is cheaper than a Scotty, and will do an excellent job of filtering. But you won't see as much EGT reduction as a Scotty can give you.

If the Scotty system was available with the ProGard7 element, I would recommend it in all cases. But it's only available with the regular AFE element, which I don't trust as much for filtration...

That said, my fears of filtration may not be valid. Rod (at Wildcat) says they have run the Scotty (with the regular element) and MANY trucks and NEVER seen an increase in silicon in the used oil analysis.

So, if that's good enough for you, get the Scotty.

I used the OEM attachment hardware, and my heatshield is solid as a rock.
They couldn't have changed hardware from 2001.5 to 2002.
Ahhh, I think I see your problem, I'm pretty sure I drilled 1/2 inch holes, then stuffed the rubber mushroom nut thingies into those holes.
I removed them from the OEM airbox,
then measured the holes left behind at least 5 times until I was sure of the size.

I had the guy that fabbed up my HS rivet a couple L brackets to the shield, then cut some slots in them to fit some off the shelf hose clamps (I think Home Depot called them worm straps or something like that), attached two together through the brackets, then around the BHAF (could't find one big enough, so opted for two)

Here's a pic of the brackets.
He installed them backwards, but I think it was a good thing.
Now the BHAF sits on top of them, leaving a space underneath for some air flow.

Using the same template as you, I don't rub the AC lines, but the intake hose is pretty close to the heat shield.

I really like both assemblies. I feel I will definitely be adding a BHAF soon! Is that the Outerwears cover I have heard about? I saw another thread here where a member said they are easy to make, but he never posted back how to do it.

Yes, it's an Outerwears.

Wondering about that post, maybe he's going to start making them himself and selling them?
Doesn't want to give away trade secrets?

I ended up removing the stock airbox nut things (I think mine are kinda starting to strip out anyway) and used some grommets and M6x1.0 nuts & washers... solid as a rock now. I think I'm going to go without the Outerwears since I moisture isn't a concern with the marine filter.

From the looks of your pics, your mounting holes are in a slightly different location as mine. That is probably the reason for the slight rub on the A/C line. I just trimmed the HS back a little. As an after thought, I don't like the way the A/C charging port is blocked by the HS and the next time I have it off, I'm going to cut an access hole in the HS and then make a cover plate to block off the hole.

Well, the OW cover fits snug over the BHAF so my plan is when the cover wears out I'm going to cut it length wise, measure and pick up some lycra to make an exact replacement. My neighbor and I did the lycra as snow skirts over the stock foam prefilters on his SkiDoo....works well.
