Finally got my twins tuned
Well today I finally got my twins tuned in. All I can say is. I ended up putting a K31 under the hx 35. My major problem was when I opened up the wastegate to 40mm in the exhaust housing I welded the flapper arm on wrong. I had it so as the actuator was pushing the gate closed. It starts building boost around 1600 rpm and by 1800 rpm I can be pushing 25 psi. Drive pressure is 1 to 1 until about 45 psi of boost then I have about 50 psi drive pressure. I knew it would choke out on the top end since I am running a 12cm housing. Egts are in check with the Comp on 5x5 wot blasts. I even tried it goin up a 6% grade egts rose up to 1350 but with the comp on 1x1 egts never got above 1050 going up the same grade. I have very little smoke until the turbos light. So all in all I am very happy with this setup. It should be great for the occasional towing I do. (17,000# gvw) Sorry for the long post.

Long post? Ha! Do a search on my name and post as long as you wish. They haven't banned my verbosity yet!
Glad to hear the good results on your twins. I'm hoping that a Garrett GT4202 performs as well as your K31 is!
Good job!

I would love to build your dream twin setup Justin but twin BB Garretts are costly. I have read most of your posts and I agree they can be long but they are packed with good information mostly over my head. If you were a little closer I would gladly help you build yours. I probably have almost everything to build another set but the schedule 40 3" elbow. If I can get another housing for the s400 I have I could build a set using thehx-40 over s400. I havent forgot about the wastegate pics either the ones I took just didn't show what I was trying to tell you. Thanks to all the great memebers on this site that made this possible.

Well, I can't tell you what the Garrett cartridges are made of-- I assume ceramic just because I don't think metal would survive as well. But that's just a guess.
I'm under the impression that the Turbonetics units are ceramic in their BB part, but as you know, they are only *partially* a ball bearing turbo, while the other bearing is a 360 journal bearing. That's why the T-netics chargers don't have restricted oil feeds or the need for water cooling.
I'm throwing my lot in with Garrett, and hoping the bearings are made of something other than brass

Well, I was just curious because ceramic technology is a fairly recent addition to the world of power transmission - seems like it's only been a few years since ceramic BBs were brought to market for industry.
There have been high-performance alloys around for many years for extreme environments (like Hastelloy, Waspalloy and even Battelloy ), but their expense drove the development of both high-performance coating technology and the hybrid bearings.
IMO, it would be the epitome of kewlosity to have a turbo with magnetic bearings...

The magnetic would be cool with a good water cooling setup. Maybe an electromagnet is a better way to do this? I think most permanent magnets demagnetize at high temps.

Hmmmm....
Here is a modified K31 in its own environment on a 1993 Pete project from a local diesel shop fresh off the dyno back in May from tuning. The K31 in this case was on a C15 Caterpillar that laid down over 850hp on fuel alone and then with the Pittsburgh Power box on it laid down over 1100.Yep,the K31 is one tough hombre........Andy
P.S....
This truck once done came back to the shop when they had their Big Rig dyno event, which was held the same weekend as my clubs Spring Fling show, and took top honors laying down near 1200 hp on #2 alone.
