Faster pyrometer?

One thing I never see people post about is the speed of the factory pyrometers that come with gauges, which leaves much to be desired. I come from the DSM world and though many people never ran EGT gauges because knock and AFR were a much better way to tune, those who did always upgraded the probe to a faster probe. I remember that the factory probe was VERY lethargic, and the upgraded probes responded almost instantaneously.

So what gives? Why do we, the diesel crowd who relies entirely on EGT, not use faster thermocouples?

Here's a link for those of you who are curious what I'm talking about....

yea i thinks its a good idea. the only thing that would worry me without actually having one to look at it how stong the tip of the probe is. i looked at the pic on your link and not to sure. if the tip blows off it is going right into the turbo

Although faster, exposed tip thermocouples are not durable. The wet exhaust from our engine would eat up the exposed tips in short order. the 1 to 2 second reaction times we have with the closed tips is fine for 99.9% of automotive diesel applications.

You can upgrade to a SPA Technique pyro which is closed end and still much faster than other pyros.

Not cheap, though.

Here is a link to a study done some time ago. It compares several different setups.

On my old PSD I had an autometer phantom pyro that had all of the connections come to a box. The leads from the pyro wired into the box and the gauge wired into the box. Was that the race setup one?

Anyway, it was way more responsive than my current autometer pyro. I went 100000 miles with that setup and never a lick of trouble.

Wow, good read, but does anyone know how old it is? Just wondered if it would be current production pyrometers.

Current production pyros won't be much different. The probes are rarely to never redesigned, and THEY are what determines speed, not so much the guage itself.

I never understood what that box was for.
I got the same gagues used but had no idea what the box was for so i just connected the pyro right to the gauge.
