Fabulous !!! 5th gear went away...... AGAIN !!

I can't tell you how sick to death of these 5 speeds I am. This is # 6 in 250,000 miles, and I never lug fifth, and I never, ever use fifth gear when fully loaded. I don't get it !!

Fifth gear now just makes a very loud clicking sound when engaged, and I'm assuming the nut backed off again from the " bullet proof " mod that's been done. *** ??

Is it possible for me to just ignore this for awhile, and just never touch 5th again for now, or will this thing disintegrate on it's own, even not using 5th ?? I guess what I'm asking is, Is this nut going to come all the way off, and destroy something, or am I good to go if I leave 5th alone for now.

Just wondering............

Woah dude, that is bad karma! 6????? I've never heard of that before.

How many different trannys are we talking about?? Or has the nut backed off 6 times in the same Tranny?

I did a few thousand miles with no 5th gear and improved my fuel mileage. Just couln't go over 55mph. When my tranny was tore apart all other parts were in good shape, so it must not have done any damage. But do yourself a favor and call Dan at www.quad4x4.com He can get your problem fixed up.

Well, That's 6 different trannys !!

After #2, they all said that there's was the ultimate solution, including the one from the website listed above.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but this is ridiculous.

I've got the beefiest mainshaft available, and the latest-greatest deal for a 5th gear nut available on the market thus far..........Supposedly.

I'm gonna call Dan again, and see what he say's, maybe there's something new out there since last October, when I changed it out before.

This is EXACTLY why I made the post awhile ago about a BULLET PROOF aftermarket tranny, and if someone makes one, and I guess there's not yet.

Anyone else had this bad of luck with these ??

The last tranny I had blown up was taken apart, and they told me that the internal gears on the mainshaft were rolled over. That's when he asked me what the heck I've got in this truck for Torque........

I told him that the only upgrade I had at the time was the Superchips program, and it's set on "Tow-Safe".

He told me that the last one he saw like that was behind a truck that was putting almost 950ft-lbs of Torque to the wheels.

I know mine never was, or will be that

Dan does have an improved shaft out that he developed himself and just got the patent in place here in the last couple of months. I think I would think twice on who's doing these rebuilds, if they have been done by the same shop or person.

on my old 98.5 i went thru 5 5spd, was told to run an extra qt of fluid in it and not to tow real heavy loads with my mods on. didnt have a problem when i ran the extra qt. on my tranny's i was ripping the gears apart along with the clutch and only had the tst power max 2 in the truck. They also told me to pull the hills in 4th. If you got the money get the 6spd if you plan to keep the truck they told me it is a lot stronger then the 5spd. the failures started at about 150k until i got rid of it at 260k
