Creating a compressor stall (reverse flow) on a turbo shaft spinning over 100,000 rpm is never good!
If turbos could talk, it would sound more like a big "OUCH" than a bark.

Yeah, that is the function of a blow off valve. However, there is a much easier and less expensive way to handle it. If you don't slam the throttle shut you won't cause the turbo to stall (bark). On a manual trans its not realistic to shift and ease out of the throttle between every shift but since you've got an auto its shouldn't be an issue. I'm sure there are better places to spend your money than a BOV.
