Exhaust upgrade and Texas Emissions Test

I plan on putting on an MBRP 4" exhaust next month and going with the muffler delete pipe (is that what is referred to as straight piping?). Currently the county I live in tests emissions on gasser cars and trucks, but not diesels. Diesel emissions testing is coming on the horizon (forget if it is 2006 or 2007). Will the muffler delete option put me in jeopardy of failing an emission test? Since the MBRP systems come with a muffler, how easy would it be to switch the muffler in for the test and then take it out when the test is done (is it just a couple of clamps or do I need to buy a welder )?

Thanks,
~Rob

Nope. I've had my truck straight piped since I bought it and I got tested in an emissions county and they never said a word. Since your truck didn't come with any emissions equipment on it from the factory it's a moot point. Plus, in the state of Texas, a turbo is considered a muffling device. So your covered there as well.

Actually, all Texas does with OBDII and higher gassers is check for codes - no tailpipe sniff. That's only for the earlier gassers. Diesels are exempt from either method today, but I suspect that they will only check for codes on OBDII and higher diesels if they do bring the diesels under the emissions regulations in non-attainment areas.

I didn't know they were testing diesels in Texas yet. But that's cool that yours passed, I will go on the assumption that mine should be fine as well (considering I don't have any "performance enhancing equipment" on it).

Heck, up until this past week I had mine dumped in front of the rear axle and they never said a word about it.

I sure hope they don't implement emissions checks on diesels in TX... I wonder if they'll do a snap idle or if they'll put it on the rollers... either way, bye-bye $12.50 inspection stickers!

annoying
