Exhaust Temp

Exhaust Temp
I just bought my very first diesel...its a 2002 quad cab short bed 6 speed 4wd...it has 80 thousand miles on it...the guy who traded this truck in had a boost gauge and a pyrmoter installed and the service department uninstalled it and kept it..i want to buy a new pyrometer and boost gauge for it...when i get the new pyrmoter gauge what should my exhasut temperature be reading...the service department left the sensor in the exhaust so it will be really easy to add a gauge to it...also it is after the turbo does that matter or should i change that

We remove the "goodies" from used trucks too. Seems buyers often see them as a sign of "abuse" than a helpfull addition....however I would have taken the probe too! That said, I believe you will want to install a new pyro probe as most are calibrated to the gauge they are installed with....If I'm wrong someone please chime in.
I keep my 01 below 1150. I often hear that they can run a little higher for short times, but I would sure hate to find out the hard way that my gauge was reading a bit low.

You will also want the probe mounted pre-turbo, it gives more accurate readings that way. Under 1200 is usually good, I try to keep mine even lower than that but it can get hard when towing.

it seems alot of people here like the gauge pre-turbo.drilling the exhaust mani with the turbo still in place don't sound like a good idea though.if you had the turbo off,you could suck the metal shaving's out with a wet/dry vac

Drilled my with turbo intact. Did a light center punch and drilled about 1/32", brushed off the shaving and smeared grease on the hole, repeated this until I got through then used a magnet and swept the inside of the manifold. No problems took all of 5 minutes. I posted re my EGT's and so far everything has been fine. Unloaded min 800 but on a good climb consistent 1250-1300 but loaded it takes alot of attention to keep it below 1300 and can instantly light to 1600+ if I'm not paying attention. I've hit 1600+ a couple of times for about 10-15 sec each time with no problems so far but it's not something I really try and usually happens when I'm screwing with the stereo. Read my sig for mods.

2500superram with all 35 posts has a lot of gall to say anything about those tiny shavings that blow out down the line at idle before the turbine wheel in the exhaust is even turning fast. That said, at speed I doubt it would hurt anything either. Many have drilled pyro pre turbo with no problems ever mentioned. Go pre turbo or you might as well not even have the gauge. Plus comparing numbers to find out what is normal is ten times easier cause 90% on here have pyro mounted in the right location.

I agree with BB24, lots of guys on here have drilled with the turbo on, myself included, with no problems. Just clean it out with a magnet. Any small shavings left will blow out before it ever spools.
And I'm guessing he won't even be drilling a hole, it has a probe already.

I've heard 1250max safe side. I try to keep under that, but as said earlier it is hard when you are towing. I feel it is a worthy tool to have when driving and expensive to fix diesel. Hope this helps. Shame on those guys for stealing the guages out of vehicles. This tells me they are not trust worthy. My truck was used off the lot, and had most all the the stuff it now has. They used that as a selling point. I would not trust that dealer!

Sorry, I forgot earlier, 1250* max sustained, going over isn't that big of a deal, just try not to do it often, and don't keep it there.
I wouldn't think anything of the dealer keeping the stuff off your truck, fairly common practice, most people want to buy a stock vehicle, not a "hot rod"

I put my pyro pre turbo. My egt's are a constant 850* at 75 empty. Towing 5000lbs at 75 they are a constant 1150-1250*. Up hills as high as 1600*. Sled pulling, as high as 1865*. My guage shows the max. Cant keep the truck cool. been seeing these temps for about 6 months. New turbo 3 weeks ago and still the same.

Would somebody post a pic. of a pre-turbo installation please, where's the easiest and best place to drill and tap, and if you have it, a pic. of the boost hook up also, sure would help this dummy out.
Thanks,
Thanks,
