Exhaust flow 4" vs. dual 4" vs. 5"

I've always heard the 4" is the biggest exhaust most people need, and unless you're over 500hp, the 5" will hurt power. So where does the dual 4" fit in? Will it flow more like the 4" or 5"? Is there a suggested min. hp for dual 4"? How do EGT's compare on the different sizes?

Dual

I have the Motoblue 4"dual exhaust on my 99 DRW and i love it. It is throaty and looks really cool with the 5"tips on it. i got mine from RPMoutlet.com through Ebay.
As with diesel the faster you can get the exhaust gases out of the engine the cooler and better the truck will run.
just my 2cents

Not to step on anyone's toes, but I personally think duals should stay on gassers, unless of course they are stacks. I cant' stand seeing dual exhaust on a diesel coming from underneath the bed, but too each is own. If your gonna dual it, then go w/ stacks. Just my $.02.

I feel the same way... can't really explain WHY, but that's just the way I'm wired...

FWIW, a "dual" 4" isn't really a dual 4"... it's a 4" system that Y's... it won't flow any better than a single 4"...

everyone says 5" hurts untill you're in the 500-550 range. didn't cause me a moment's pause... nothing compares to the sound of a straight 5" system...

5 inch causing power loss is just somebody's opinion I don't see how it could be true I have a bd 5 inch on my 2004.5 I didn't notice such a thing. Dual 4's is about a straight comparison with the single 5. I have them on my 01 (Dual 4) although I am going to put a set of stacks on it shortly.

Off the topic ctd nut that sounds like bad a%& Jeep !!

Kyle, I would contend that a single 4 is about a straight comparison with the single 5 at your power levels...

splitting the 4" pipe into two 4" pipes doesn't magicly make it flow better...

you'll love the stacks

i went from a 4" to a 5" it had more power with the 4". and it was a noticable differance. i didn't belive what everyone was saying, and felt the same way, as in more was better, i was wrong. i was right at 400 rwhp when i went to a 5" and i bet i was down 20 hp. now that i am in the 450 range i think it is a even swap.

Gunracer did you dino your truck before and after you swaped exhaust systems? I have a 5 inch system on my truck with a six inch chrome tip and it sounds great and run great too.

i didn't dyno it after i did the swap, and then i did some more plate changes since then and have upped the power so no way to prove it. but it sure felt weaker after i put the 5" system on it. and spooled a bit slower also.

I went to 4" and stacks for a couple reasons:

Stacks - so that I could remove some of the piping from under the truck - don't need to get it ripped out off road and wrapped around the rear axle or crushed and then have to hacksaw the headache away.

4" - I had seen a few other trucks running 5's and it just looked a little too big - didn't really like the look of it.

Only problem I've had with the stacks is that now, during the summer, I can't drive down the freeway with the rear slider and rear side vents open - I can't hear a **** thing inside the truck at all - just the stacks! LOL Anyone got a pair of headphones they don't need?

All in all I just love the sound of the stacks - specially when I'm getting on the freeway or passing someone on the city streets. What surprised me the most is the great comments I've gotten from quite a few people where ever I go - I was expecting the opposite!

I've got just a few (poor) pict's in my gallery if you want to take a look - they're a custom set I bought from an online company - you can PM me if you want and I'll send you the info.
