Exhaust Brakes

Ordered new 03 Crew Cab HO. Diesel is a new concept for me. I ordered the Auto after a very long debate. I think I did the right thing.

What I would like to know is why there is concern with using an exhaust brake on the automatic. I think some fire trucks run cummins motors, autos and these brakes.

Would I damage anything.

Secondly, what is the best brake to use?

Re:Exhaust Brakes

The concern is that on a stock automatic transmission, the torque converter doesn't lock up till you hit 3rd gear.
And, on my 2002 anyway, as soon as you let off the go pedal, the TQ unlocks and the truck drops to idle, even at highway speed.

No lockup, no resistance, no braking force.

You can add a manual lockup switch, but again, on a stock auto the lockup clutches can't hold, resulting in slipping, heat, more slipping and eventual tranny failure.

Now, you can get the transmission turned up by one of the aftermarket tranny guru's (no wars) and get a torque converter that can lock up in 2nd gear, and a better valve body to hold it in lockup so the E-brake can do its job.

If I've missed any of the high points, someone else feel free to chime in .

phox

Re:Exhaust Brakes

If I'm remember correctly. I read that the new 03 HO (and I think the SO) autos can handle an exhaust brake from the factory. Now. With that said. It's time for a tranny war. ;D

[move][glow=blue, 20, 600]ATS[/glow][/move]

Re:Exhaust Brakes

I also heard that the new 48 is set up to accept an Ebrake, whatever that means, and that Dodge is testing some version but that it has not "blessed" and Ebrake yet
