Exhaust Brake confusion

I am looking into getting a exhaust brake, I understand how they work but I am confused on what all is needed to control them on my pick up.

And what works better inline or off the turbo?

directly off the turbo takes less time to build up pressure. ( a couple of seconds) when down the line
