exhaust
i have a 99 auto 4x4 with stock resonator and muffler. would i get better performance by just replacing the muffler out with a aftermarket one. I would like to leave the resonator on to keep the noise and drone down. dont have enough money to replace whole exhaust. if so any suggestions on a muffler. thanks, any replies appreeciated

the exhaust is the first mod you should do.
you have to worry about getting the exhaust gases out as fast as possible to keep heat down then you can go and do fueling mods.
you can replace the muffler and resonator with an aero turbine and it will not have th straight pipe drone

I have a stock truck. I cut the muffler and resonator off and had No increase in power, at least not one that I noticed. Its LOUDER but thats about it. The question is on a stocker will it give a noticeable amount of power. He also wants it to be quiet. Until a box or etc, egts will not be a problem with the stock muffler obviously. I would hence leave it alone. With an aftermarket muffler it will have cooler egts but at what cost and why with no mods? Ya get where I am coming from? Save your money for gauges and the a comp box and full exhaust that can lower egts and be melow.

I'm about as free-flowing as I can get on a stock truck- Megamouth 4" downpipe and 4 feet of 4" straight pipe behind it. During the short test drive I did (just installed it today) it seems like the turbo may spool just a tiny bit quicker, and the engine revs a bit quicker without a load (a bit better response), but I have no gauges, no quarter mile times, and no dyno info to verify it, so it could just be wishful thinking on my part. Other than the throttle and turning the star wheel, the engine is completely stock. Hopefully that will change in the near future, since I may be ordering a fuel plate this week.

But there is no performance gain. None that I have found at least.

Actually, it doesn't seem louder than the straight 3" I had, its just much deeper toned. I took my wife for a ride last night, and her comments were that it doesn't sound louder (either from in the truck or outside it), and that the tone is much less annoying than the 3". And I thought the 3" wasn't really that loud, unless I was really after it pulling hard up a hill. This thing is definately far from quiet, but its not a cop-magnet.

dingoo,
By replacing the stock parts you'll get a little better sound and some EGT drop, but you're still restricted to the size of the pipe and no muffler will be louder than some folks want too. Take a look at the MBRP system they have a 30 inch muffler packed with a ceramic blanket and stainless steel wool, when installed it's basically stock sound wise except when you flat foot the go pedal, then you'll hear it.Remember too a 24 valve has a noisy engine that covers up most all the exhaust if you have a well designed muffler anyway. Plus the MBRP will drop EGT's a lot more than a stock pipe and you will get 8-15 HP as a bonus, that's not enough for some folks to feel on an 8000 LB truck but it's there and you have now prepared your truck for any other mods you might do concerning fuel etc.
