Re:Electronic High Idle Kit

I posted on this same topic for and 03 a wihle back and the best advice I got was cut a stick and use it ;D. My truck will idle several hours out in the field some times and I have not seen any harm yet other than higher than normal hours on the truck. I wold be real interested in a PTO function to run a generator or something though if it can happen.

Re:Electronic High Idle Kit

Ok guys, I researched the PTO wire to see what it does. When an aftermarket PTO is installed the wire is enabled while the PTO is in gear to shut off some OBD11 functions in both the ECM and the PCM according to the service manual mainly to avoid setting some codes. So it is of no use to the high idle subject that we are concerned with.

Its function though would be that if codes are set because of a high idle this wire being I believe grounded would stop the codes from being set.

In other words, tuck it up in the harness and forget it :-

I bought my electronic high idler from usdieselparts.com
this was for an 02 cummins 24 valve. You would have to check to see if they have what you want for your truck.

Re:Electronic High Idle Kit

I have an exhaust brake on my truck. In cold weather, I engage it and it keeps the exhaust temp at about 400 degrees. Wouldn't that accomplish the same thing as a high idle?

I been running a Idle up switch for over a year now. It works Great in the Cold weather up here in Canada. I end up idling alot and it saves bending a push rod! It cost about $400 Can. I have been a long time member of dodge truck world and now I am a member here to. This is my first post here of many, looks like awell run site.

I have the Cummins high idle as well, but I believe that the question was related to the 03 and 04 model years...looks like there isnt much available yet for these trucks.

Probably even better. At high idle in cold weather the egt on my work truck goes as low as 225 post turbo, with the e-brake it will run around 450. As to whether or not slow idle hurts anything in the real world, back when I was a school bus driver in the Chicago suburbs, the company I worked for would idle the buses (all IH, mostly 6.9 and 7.3 IDI, some DT408, DT466, and a couple T444E) overnight and on weekends if the temp was going to be subzero. Some of the buses would have sooty ice stalagmites reaching up to their tailpipes from the ground after a weekend of this. I used to work the graveyard shift Saturday nights doing yard security, and one of the assignments was to go around with a flashlight and make sure all the old IDI units were charging, and rev 'em for a minute if they weren't to wake up the regulator again. I can't say that the long idling killed any of these old buses, some were 12 years old on the original motor at the time. Every time I smell diesel exhaust on a cold morning, I remember standing in the middle of the yard in the middle of the night, with 200 diesels clattering around me, watching the diesel fog drift downwind. I remember once around 5 AM on a Sunday morning the fleet manager called to say it would be warmer that night, shut 'em down. After a night of listening to the clatter, the silence when I shut the last bus off was deafening.
Sorry that was so long and rambling, as well as being just barely on topic. :

Re:Electronic High Idle Kit

So how does one get these aftermarket companies to get off their rears and offer something for 2003+? They aren't tapping the market for more money?

2003's have been out for over a year........and no high idle kits and dually tires. If I figure it out, I'm marketing it for sure. This is nuts.

Hi Idle for 2004

Just to let you know that the Dodge dealer has an upgrade for the 2004 2500 and 3500 that let's you use the cruise control to engage and increase and decrease the hi idle speed. My buddy got a letter about it and had the dealer down in Texas put it on after a lot of hassle from them since it's not "needed" in Texas. I have a 2003 2500 and for some reason there isn't a way for them to do it on that model just the 2004. Just to let you know. I'm not sure if the dealers will know what you're talking about because when I went in to ask for it they looked at me funny.

For a fast idle system for your trucks check with the manufacturers of emergency vehicles such as ambulances. All of the ambulances manufactured in at Tri-Star Industries in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in Canada have a system on them that sets the idle speed higher when the emergency brake is applied while sitting at an emergency scene to keep the unit warm, charging system up higher to run all the warning lights etc..
These units are electrically operated but that is all I know about them.
