Electric Fans

Who has them and what kind are they, and how are they working out?

I don't think anybody's running them because nobody makes a set big enough to keep these trucks cool. Our stock fan uses 10,000+cfm where as the best electric is like 8000. Do a search on electric fans. Lots of info.

there was a guy in a 12 valve at the dyno day in buda running them. didn't get to talk to him but he laid down 743 or something like that with them. i think it's possible but not practical.

Yeah, it's been mentioned around here before. They cost way too much imo. Plus, I still don't think they can push as much air as a stock fan. Might work just fine but for sure I wouldn't spend that much money on it.

Nope. Flex-a-lite even has a disclaimer on them saying that they might not be enough for heavy towing.

Horton used to make an electric fan clutch that used the stock fan but they cost $600+.

If your looking for electric fans in increase power I don't think it will help much. I made a few passes down the track with the fan removed and had no change in the results, however if you are looking for increased cooling I don't know.

Well, I guess at your hp levels no, but did it even feel like the truck was a little lighter with the fan removed? The fan takes away like 30 hp.

Only when it's engaged.

I have them and have been running them for about 4 years now without any problems. It heats up a little faster in the winter and the A/C stays cold at lights. Mine (2 sets) are out of a late '80s Park Ave. I have them wired to come on via an adjustable thermostatic switch and have one come on at half speed when the A/C compressor runs.

My electric fan is out of a 93 Ford Taurus. It does well and pulls over 30amps. It will kill the battery in about 20 minutes if the truck isn't running.

I'm surprised the Taurus came with fans that big.

I tried a Flex-a-Lite Model 350 dual puller setup on my 1996 3500. It couldn't cool the truck pulling a 5th wheel in Houston stop-and-go traffic or in the Texas Hill Country during the summers.

This setup drew 50 amps. 50 amps x 12 volts = 600 watts ~ 0.8 horsepower. I paid a lot of money to find out that 0.8 horsepower won't move enough air to cool a truck that's working hard. On the other hand, they worked fine for mall cruising.

I don't get it, why don't they just make an electric fan with two big electric motors that could even outperform the stock fan? Like one of these big ground fans but in 12v:

I believe the conesus generally is that they work fine for eveything except for towing at all. I think is was PaulB that said that if his clutch fan locks up when he is staging during a drag that he knows he is going to lose that race.
