EGT's and air flow

How can you tell if you need an aftermarket air induction system?

1. If you are pulling the factory filter minder all the way down with the factory airbox and a clean filter, you need something different

2. If you are pulling over 1.2"Hg (15"H2O) vacuum upstream of the turbo, you need something different.

3. If you are pushing the stock turbo past 34 psi to cool EGT's (honestly, at this point you actually need a larger turbo)

4. If aftercooled air temp exceeds 95F on a single (Mustang or load type) dyno run when ambient temp is less than 70F, you either have a blocked C.A.C., or you need a larger turbo and most likely a different air induction system.

5. If you just want something cool looking under the hood..... 8)

-just something to ponder

p.s. if you are running twins, the 95F temp thing does not count!

Re:EGT's and air flow

Wouldn't the 95 degree after cooler temps depend on altitude?

Where are you measuring the temps? From the IAT?

Have you ever compared those temps to the IAT? Last time I checked mine while cruising at 65 mph, the IAT was 35-40 degrees above ambient.

Re:EGT's and air flow

no, I have not compared them to the IAT voltages. When cruising on the fwy, with less than 10 psi of boost, my readings ftom the TC were within 10F of ambient.

You bring up an interesting point, air density can play a huge role in ait temps.

On a 65 degree day cruising on the hi-way IAT was reporting 105. The IAT sensor is in the factory postion which is not the best place. Altitude here is near 6000 feet.

I am sure the turbo has to spin faster to create the same manifold pressures as at sea level. Higher turbo rpm would mean more heat from compression. Would the intercooler effiency change with altitude?

Re:EGT's and air flow

No but it will with humidity or water vapor saturation. Intercooler efficiency that is.
