EGT question...1350deg with MINOR mods..fix??

Hey Guys...

VERY impressed so far

just got finished with a coupla minor (first) mods..

gauges (of course)
timing @ 16.5*
100 plate, 3/4 forward (i didn't even cut it back to the plate 'holder', just straighted out the stock profile from the top down)
AFC moved up
loosened the AFC spring setscrew (this makes the AFC arm move out of the way faster correct??)
stock 3" DP so far...

i'm seeing about 33 lbs of boost (was atleast 40 with the gate blocked off, but just installed an adjustable elbow) spikes to about 38-40, then backs down to 33 or so...

my EGT's are 1350...and that's when it runs out of stream @ 2300rpm or so...

i'm afraid what i'll see for EGT when the 3k GSK goes in....

with these minor mods, is it REALLY time for a turbo upgrade yet?

help! thanks guys!

You would have the 215 pump. It pushes a lot more fuel than my 180 pump (in stock form). Your EGTs aren't a surprise to me.

If the turbo is stock, pull the 12 housing, and install a 16, at bare minimum. Or better yet, maybe something like a HTT 62/12 or 14.

Forrest,

lol....that was the plan, actually

i guess what i meant to say was, ' with this deal now, what in the world is supposed to happen when 'one' has a 3k gsk, which allows 700 rpm MORE of the 5 seconds i get of 1350 now?? which if i HAD more RPM, i could imagine what the temps would be then'...

bmoeller- i suppose that makes me feel like i'm not doing something wrong... pennies? in the jar-o, anyone? taking tips, etc for a new turbo...lol!

i'm wondering if that **** boost elbow will allow me to adjust it to that point...i stopped 5-6 times to adjust the elbow, and seemed to gain a lb or so each time (started at 25-ish, and started to crank down on the screw a bit more the last 2-3 times...) it seems the boost elbow will just allow the gate to open SLOWER, as eventually the tube will become pressurized with manifold pressure, and startgating at 30+...i suppose i can tighten it down a bit more...

i'd hate to run the gat blocked, as i know it's not good for the turbo...although the 1100 deg i saw at the 40psi were cool...lol

i'll try upping the boost a bit more....and start saving the pennies...

i was gunna do the washer mod, and save the full 4k gsk until i go to twins, and do the gasket, studs, a touch-up port work, etc as it will be MUCH easier to change the valve springs with the head off...

If u dont wanna run a blocked wastegate

get a manual boost control elbow, those little buggers will allow u to manually adjust boost, and u dont have to block ur wastegate, ive run mine blocked before and saw about the same boost that u have seen... sept with the 370s my pyro was pegged much quicker..

those adjustable boost elbows are a pain... you might try tightening the wastegate actuator rod, or going w/ a pressure relief style boost control valve or both? a few more pounds of boost is going to help your EGT's without hurting the turbo.

honestly, I wouldn't mess with housings on the 35... do the turbo in one fell swoop. I've got a buddy selling a PDR 40 you might be able to pick up affordably.

I love Mike's crazy redneck a**... rode in his little short bed truck yesterday (that thing is nuts!) but I'd just do a real GSK right off the bat. you can get a 4k kit cheap without the valve springs. just don't rev it past about 3400 and you'll be fine.

PS, 5 seconds of 1350* ain't gonna hurt nothin'

w/ my old 97 it was more like 10 seconds of a pegged 1600* pyro

upped the boost a bit...now it takes a bit longer, and a slight uphill for the EGT's to get to 1350...(i actually saw 1400 the other day...although it was only for a coupla seconds )

the gauge is flashing to 40 psi then settles to about 34-ish..

I'm running an adjustable boost elbow currently... i can see why they are a pain...i haven't been able to find the correct parts for the pressure relief style... i have a needle valve, but it's not NPT fittings, it's tube/ferrule fittings, and i can't find a barbed fitting with the correct end grrr...

hmm, me thinks some twins would be cool!!! or just something decent for now...don't have the $$$ for a twin setup... stupid house...

Forrest, you have a PM

twins are cool... DDP4's #100 plate ground PAST the top plate, AFC housing and wheel full forward, AFC lever ground ~.100" up front and chopped off in back, thin AFC front washer spaced ~.100" off the shaft. (I'm hoping/assuming the front plug is my rack stop)

my pyro is just hitting 1300* at about 2800 in 6th (3.54's 35" tires)

PDR 35-12 on top modified for twins by Piers.

S400 on bottom.

I'm surprised at how well it cools, and at first I thought something was wrong till I figured out where my fuel was! but I'm sure EGT's will start climbing pretty good above 3k as that top turbo starts choking the system off!
