Angry Egt Probe Placement?

Where is the most common place to mount the EGT mine was mounted in the elbow right behind the turbo, my EGT never climbs over 850-900 degrees, should I have tapped the hole in the exhaust manifold or where, becuase my readings are low, I believe?

850 to 900 sound resonable for post turbo mounting. Most guys here including me prefer pre turbo for more accurate readings.

Your Reading Will Typically Be About 300 Degrees Lower Post Turbo. Most Are Mounting In Exhaust Manifold, That is were I mounted mine. I am kind of worried to put it pre-turbo just besause if the little probe breaks off and come back through your turbo and trashes it that is big bucks.

The only reason I could ever see to have the probe mounted post-turbo was to monitor turbo cool down temps. Otherwise, pre-trubo is superior.

The back cylinders of the 24v run hotter than the front, so mount the pre-trubo probe on the rear exhaust manifold exit passage, near the flange. It is oppisite on the 12v.

There are web sites, somewhere out there, which show the proper mounting locations.

I used to run a pre/post setup and when idling to cool down the pre read the same as the post and dropped at the same rate so it's not even good for that. I also wouldn't worry about the probe breaking off. In the years I've been cruising the diesel forums on the web I've never read of one snapping off so I think your good. Not to mention that you've got a better chance of roasting a piston than the probe breaking off. I also noticed that at WOT the difference between the two could be as high as 500*. And that was with just a BHAF and a 4" exhaust. No fueling mods. I could only imagine what it would be like if you were over fueled or heavily modified.
