egt gauge off???

I recently installed a di-pricol egt gauge on my 02 and was wondering if its reading low (inaccurate) or if my truck just runs cool. the hottest it has ever been is 1150, and that was pulling a 13k 5er up a 13% grade at WOT. it is hard to get to 1000* unlees your going WOT onto the freeway or a 100 MPH blast on an open road. it will jump real fast at WOT from 300* to 800* then it slowly climbs after that. cruising it is at about 700-800* now all of these reading are PRE TURBO, so i would think it should be hotter than that. the accessories that im running are bosch rv 300 injectors (i guess they are the same as the 275s) and an edge ez with a k & n with box mods and 4" exhaust. thanks for the help.

Oh and i forgot to mention that my VP is on its way out and is gunna be replaced next week, if that has anything to do with it.

Unless you have access to some expensive test instruments about the only way to verify the accuracy of your pyro is to swap it with another one.
Your cruising temps sound about right though, my guess is your pyro is correct.
It should also read between 250 - 300 after idling for awhile. Many will even read the outside temp correctly when the engine is cold.

You could always boil water-212*F and then boil oil (I would have to check) about 600*F. Place your probe into each and see what it reads! Very easy for a 2 point calibration. I believe Omega makes a little "box" that you can plug into your guage and it simulates temperatures to check it.

I checked, it from ALTEK, Series 22 Thermocouple temperature simulator. It goes from 100 to 2000*F.

thanks for the responses so far, would my vp44 dying kill my egts on the top end, ive heard it will, but i dont know. one reason i ask if my gauge would be off is my buddy has almost the same setup (except his VP is still good) but he has 50 hp BD injectors instead of the 275s, and he has no problem hitting 1400* while pulling. he has autometer gauges instaed of di-pricol. I guess im just wondering if yall that have the di-pricols have had any trouble with them reading cool, or if that 20 hp difference in injectors would make that much difference. thanks again

I've never tried pulling my 5er up a 13% grade but can't imagine I could go WOT without getting into egt trouble fast, heck I can hit 800 in town on the flat with no load, cant hit 900-1000 towing in town (not WOT). Don't know if the dieing VP could be the cause but if it still is reading like that after the new VP I would be highly suspicious

I have a third generation but dont think that matters.I get my temp up over 1200 towing 10,000 trailer with little effort.I have a di-pricol. At 65 mph ,I generly stay at 600-800.

Ozman gave you a great test.

Level at 70 mph, top gear or O.D. (you don't list a tranny), maintaining speed....should read 650-750*. I think that's the same for just about all CTD's....no matter the HP.

You say your 700-800* "at cruise"....sounds about right!

Inaccurate Pyro's are very rare.

With an EZ and Mach 2's...I could never get over 1100* unless I pushed really hard.

Your numbers are right where mine are except I haven't tried pulling 13k up a 13% grade. I'd say it's pretty accurate.
