EGT explained ?
I am trying to find out what's a good range of EGT.
What temps are dangerous and for how long ?
If I tow uphill and get 1200* for 20 minutes (example) is it too much ?
How about 1400 for 1 minute (hard acceleration).
I an trying to learn to read my gauge.
Thanks

I think the standard is 1350 max with stock timing. Anything else is personal choice.
With my mods I don't let it get over 1200 degrees for very long while towing. In the 1/4 mile I hit 1550 before the traps.

My rule of thumb is...The heavier the load, the lower the limit! I've seen two head gaskets blown on CTD's with mild power added (smallish injectors and an EZ) that thought 1250* sustained was OK for towing.
For gross weight or towing anything over 2,000 lbs, I never exceed 1200* for more than 10 sec of acceleration. Always did what I had to to keep sustained egt's at or below 1150*. No longer a problem with twins.
All the above is for a 24v. 12v's ....?
But I suspect another good rule of thumb, for both, is... The more HP you have (use), the lower the limit!
