EGT drop estimate please

So I have stock truck except edge ez and high flow OEM style air filter. Pulling my camper in NM and CO I stay at 1200 egts on grades. How much change would going to 4" exhaust system make. Not sure if 100 degrees is worth the cost. What are your thoughts. Thanks

I'm not sure on how much the egt's will drop, but I'd say an exhaust upgrade is up there with gauges as far as a necessity. When I bought my edge juice a few years ago, the place refused to install it unless I upgraded my exhaust as well. They didn't even care if I got the exhaust from them, but that was a personal requirement from them because of problems they had seen prior with chipped trucks, stock exhaust, and high egts, so I'd say it would help quite a bit. Let your truck breathe man! How far can you run if you had to breathe through a drinking straw?

Peak EGT's wil drop over 200 degrees usually. The more fuel you put to it, the more drop you will see.

You lost me there. more fuel = lower EGT's?

I also see 1200* with an ez and stock exhaust in CO pulling. 200* sounds like a good drop if it's true with a 4" exhaust.

I think what Quad is saying is that you see more gains (lower EGTs) from a 4" exhaust the more heavily fueled you are.

So a stock guy might not see a 200* drop, but someone pushing more fuel with injectors or big fueling boxes may see over 200* drops.

So if I am not heavily fueled and I only see a 100 degree drop, how is this letting it breathe so much better. Still not convinced. However if there is a benefit to justify then I will do it. If I knew I would get a 200degree drop then I would probably go to 4". Otherwise this "let it breathe" thing according to current input is minimul(100degree).The idea is to not need to back off as much to get under 1200 for grades and unless I can get close to 200, I dont see it helping "much" on that issue. Maybe I need more input, thanks again

Y not try ditching the stock muffler and seeing if that helps much since its not a straight threw flow. Thats very cheap and should make it flow a tiny bit better.

If 1200 is as high as you get why back off at all.

I could go higher if I keep on it. I usually end up going 50-55mph on mild to med grades at high elevation to keep at or under 1200. Just lookin for a little more performance without cookin.

The three things that brought my EGT's down the most in order of install:

BHAF
4" exhaust
Edge juice boost fooler/J-Hook

Empty, 95 degree ambient temp, I can pull a 7% grade in overdrive at 70 mph and my EGT's run about 1050-1100 degrees. If I shift out of overdrive on the same grade and run 60 mph the EGT's run about 900 degrees. Before these upgrades I could easily push it past 1300 on this grade.

The issue is that a stock truck doesn't really need to breathe that much better. Yeah, every little bit helps, but it's not really something considered to be a major restriction. For someone who is more heavily fueled, you do need to open up the exhaust side to allow more flow. But then again, you can look at the numbers to really see what is required there. You can get 5" systems, but just a 4" will support up to a pretty decent number (can't remember it offhand).

As for having to back off on the grades, I'm not sure how much a 4" system is going to help. There are bigger gains to be had here through opening up the intake side to make sure you're getting plenty of air. Also, are you running something to block off the wastegate to allow higher than stock boost with the EZ? That's another big one for bringing down the temps on the grade since you can get more air through higher boost.

I hope I'm not hijacking the OP but we have about the same truck.

I do have a j-hook, stock intake, exhaust, boost up to ~30psi pulling a grade and can sometimes, not always hit 1300+ if I'm not watching temps. I can control temps by manually locking in 3rd gear and drop it to ~1100 with maybe 2700rpm and also 25lbs boost, vs 4th 2200rpm and 18-20lbs boost. I do watch all my gauges while towing but would rather spend more time looking at the road and the scenery here in the Rockies then my gauges.

I'm not sure how much power the Edge EZ adds, but I doubt you'll see much of a difference in EGTs. Either way, I'm pretty sure you will have to watch your egts while pulling the camper up those hills. I think an exhaust is a great upgrade but if I didn't care about the sound I wouldn't do it (at least for the mild mods I have now). I also didn't notice a gain in mpgs. If you do get an exhaust, make sure you get one quiet enough for your taste. There could be some nasty drone while pulling a camper. Don't even think about a straight pipe...

Would there be any gains by just removing the cat?

No cat to worry about unless you have a California truck.

Are you running the j-hook (or some other mod) on the turbo to disable the wastegate? What is your boost on the grades?
