I regularily pull a 16K trailer and EGT's will run over 1200 if I don't pay attention. Biggest thing I've noticed is to make sure you keep the rpm's up. Towing up a small grade in 6th at 1600 rpm or so will make the EGT gauge skip very quickly toward danger zone. Drop down a gear, and the temps drop to around 900. Edge EZ, K&N on an '02 ETH.

Kevinn,

I have a very similar truck and trailer to yours and happen to live in CO, so I tow at similar altitudes to yours. My 25' TT weighs about 7K with a typical load, plus about 500 lbs. of gear in the bed when camping. I hit 9K to 10K feet nearly every time I take my trailer out in the summer.

It is amazing how quickly the EGTs climb in the mountains up to 1,000 or even 1,100 degrees, but they always seemed to level off very quickly at that range in my truck. I had to work to hit anywhere near 1,200. This was last summer when the truck was running completely stock except for the Edge EZ. I didn't have the AFE yet and hadn't installed the bigger tires. I'm not sure how the temps will react to these changes yet.

I do have what I see as an advantage in the 5 speed tranny. I have better control over my towing RPMs if I need it, but I don't find myself shifting because of temps.

I run my EZ on jumper setting 2. This reduces the fueling at low boost levels a little. I did this because I was getting a LOT of black smoke at low RPMs from an otherwise stock truck. It also helped with fuel economy. I think the full fueling at low RPMs was wasting a lot of fuel at stop lights. I don't know if this makes a difference.

I agree that a pre-turbo probe gives you a better idea what your engine is doing when towing. Don't be afraid of drilling the manifold. I felt exactly the same way. I waited about 6 weeks after I got my gauge, reading all of the posts and trying to decide how to do it, before I just did it. I followed the advice of the guys here. It took me ten minutes and was quite simple.

Just thought I'd post since our trucks and towing conditions are quite similar.

Thanks thecatsfan. I have experienced the same thing when camping and travelling over high mountain passes. The temps climb fast. I hit 1,000 post turbo completely stock last summer. I definitely need to move this pre turbo and get a better air intake. As soon as I can finish some yard projects I'll get to this.
