Edge EZ Malfunction

I've got a dandy for ya this time. The dealer installed my Edge EZ when I bought the truck in '02. Later I wanted to be able to turn it off and on, and a technician told me to cut the 2 blue wires and install a relay, which I did and it worked fine for 6 or 7 years.

With the EZ turned off, the truck doesn't smoke as much and is much smoother to drive in stop and go traffic. (it's a 6 spd)

Recently, driving at 30mph, suddenly the engine started making a funny...almost ticking, light rattling....sound and I lost power. Engine idled fine, but wouldn't accelerate. If it was a gasser, I'd have thought it was a cracked/wet distributor cap making it cross fire.

I parked the truck and - long story short - got to experimenting and found that when I turned the EZ off, the truck ran fine. It's still running fine several weeks later and I pulled the EZ right out of there.

I called Edge and the tech there had never heard of such a thing, but assured me that it wouldn't harm the VP44. I REALLY hope not.

I miss the power of having the EZ in there and am thinking of taking the relay out of the system and trying it straight. Maybe the relay contacts are corroded or something.

Has anyone here ever heard of such a thing ??

Thanks

Lar.

My pulse did die sometime ago. First symptoms were a check engine and MAP codes. Since the EZ also modifies inputs I would start with checking codes. Then try the EZ without your relay, and if this does not remedy your problem uninstall the EZ.

Dead pedal could also be a result of a failed APPS or VP44.... or a lot of other stuff gone wrong in the wiring etc- so codes are your friend...

Forgot about that - it did throw a code - I think P0216 ?? Local shop told me it meant a bad VP44 and I nearly had heart failure.

Read my post again - I did try it without the EZ and I did take it right out of the system.

Thanks

What I wanted to suggest is to remove the EZ including it's wiring(but you had already done this) and checking it. My pulse had some internal failure, but some of the EZs I saw had problems with chafed wires and rotten plugs.

P0216 is very bad.

Edge products aren't the most reliable electronics around. I went through two EZs before switching to a Smarty.

The P0216 is likely a pump problem, but it could be triggered by the bad EZ.

If the engine continues to run fine without the EZ in there, then a new module should fix you up.

Yah, I'll go to a new module soon. A knowledgeable friend has recommended the Smarty, so I'll go with that. Camper goes back on in 3 weeks and I'll want the extra power for sure.

Yah, the bad EZ did trigger the PO216 code. I have a code reader and erased the code and it hasn't come back. Truck is running great.

Thanks all
