Edge Comp Question

I helped install an Edge Comp box on a friends 2000 5spd DRW. The truck is stock other than a straight pipe. The truck doesn't feel much better than stock and doesn't smoke at all, even when lugging hard. Shouldn't the truck smoke like crazy on 5/5??? I had a 2002 ETH with the Diesel Dynamics Comp box (same thing right?) and it smoked like a freight train and felt MUCH more responsive than his '00. Did Edge do something different between then and now or what. I've checked and re-checked that the pump wire is correct and the ground is hooked to the intake elbow bolt. Is this normal, or is the box not right, what could be wrong???

try putting the box on 5x5 while driving then turn it off (or vice versa). you should feel a major difference. when i put my comp box on 3x5 i smoke alittle. 5x5 i really smoke. you might have a bad box. contacting edge products might help too. good luck....

I tried that, and it picks up a little, but nothing like it should. It feels much like an EZ. The kid didn't really know what he was doing on the install, I just cleaned it up for him. He had the ground wire hooked to the heater grid when I first met him, so I moved it hoping that was the problem, but no difference. Do you think that would've hurt the box? The truck stutters like it should when you turn it up on the fly, but it just doesn't pick up any more.

My guess would be the box. I would send it back to Edge and ask them to check it out for you, or ask for a new one. You should really feel a huge difference when you turn it on/off on the fly.

check your pump wire connection .a comp without the pump wire connected puts out the power of an EZ

Yeah, but would it still stutter when you turn it up on the fly? I wouldn't think so, but who knows...

Yup. When the pump wire is unhooked, the main power levels on the comp act just like the sub power levels when the wire is hooked up. In EZ mode, they control the responsivness.

I have expeirienced this problem before sometimes it is the box and other times you need to solder wire tap or you might have a lazy injection pump 1st step is try new box or use check light to see if wire tap is any good

If I remember correctly, my '02 would stutter whether I was moving up or down in the power levels, when I put a load on the motor. I think the box turns off for the split second you press the buttons. I think I tried holding down the button for awhile and felt it lose power until I let off of it, but its been too long.

I have a lot of "I think"s here, would someone else want to try this to see what happens?

anyways, check the culprits in the order of $$$...1. wire tap good? throw away the scotch lock and solder it 2. send box in for new one 3. check for the p0216 code.

Do you check codes on a 2000 the same as a 3rd gen? I'll check the wire tap the next time I see the guy. It's been too long since I messed around with a 2nd gen. I'm thinking maybe him having the ground hooked to the heater grid for a period of time may have fried the box

Not sure how to check for codes on the 3rd gens, but on the 2nd's, you turn the key on/off, on/off, on and leave it on then possible codes will appear on the odometer.

One way to check to see if you have a good tap on the wire is to untap it and run the helk outta it and see how high you can get your egt's. Then tap it again and run the helk outta it and see how much higher the egt's get. Thats how I did it when I tapped the wire a few months ago. The egt's got about 150* higher and alot quicker than untapped wire.

That's a pretty good idea. Oh and the 3rd gens are the same...cycle the key 3 times...

Hey Big Blue ,ya lost me there, my comp with wire unhooked acts different than what you explained ,the power levels don't work just the sub levels ie. 1-1 is the same as 2-1 , 3-1 , 4-1 , 5-1 and 1-5 is the same as 2-5 , 3-5 , 4-5 , 5-5 , I find the power levels do nothing they all have only one power gain ,just that you can affect when the power comes on with the sub levels and control smoke, I find I can only make smoke on sublevel 4 or 5 , on sublevels 1 through 3 the boost is too high to make smoke. Can anyone follow that ,and correct me if I'm wrong thanks.
