Edge Comp & heavy fueling issues

I live in the northeast where we are experiencing freezing and below freezing temps.

My truck, 01, 6 spd, HO. Airdog 150, SBC Con-Fe. Most recently, industrial injectors 180 HP injectors, industrial injection HR VP44, ARP head studs. Edge comp box since 07.

I complained of rough power delivery at ~1800 rpms and higher. Most noticeable at 5th & 6th gear. With Edge box off, there are no issues. I spoke with and emailed Edge Products.

They replied....

The issue you are having here is timing related. We advance the timing based on a stock motor but with your pump and your injectors combined with cold weather, it will hesitate like what you are seeing. We spoke with some of our VP44 guys who have the exact same problem as there is too much timing added in the cold with all of those upgrades and it will cause a pretty serious hesitation/vibration when accelerating normally. You may have to leave your product on stock levels until it warms up as there isn't a way to account for this problem now that you have dramatically altered the vehicle.

I was looking forward to drive my truck after all the work was done. Now it turns out the truck is a stock truck in temps colder than 70 degrees?!?! (I have to shut the Edge Box off)
I was informed my truck will not perform well in temps colder than 70, as per my phone call with the tech.

I just drove it today....~35 degrees. Ran rough up in the Revs.

With all the hot rod Cummins running around, I haven't read of this issue until today. I have to think there are guys running around with similar set ups and DO NOT have this problem...at least no one makes it public.

Now I've got a huge hole in my wallet from upgrades and it doesn't run any better than my 12V with a 3200GSK.

SO DISAPPOINTED.

I do not have as big of injectors but yes the truck needs to warm up to handle that much timing when it's cold the pump advances the timing and with the box on it's even more!!!

i'm not referring to the truck getting up to normal operating temp, i'm referring to the ambient temperature.
(Thats what you wrote down, but not sure if thats what you wanted to say)

okay. Like i was saying in the other tread about timing.
This Hot RoD Pump adds tons of timing. you should be able to lower the timing on your edge some correct? I never messed with edge as my history is there has always been some issues or they dont play nice with stacking other boxes. if you can adjust the edge remove all timing and drive and see

I will say this I think you will be able to drive the truck in plus 45 degrees
with no issues. the problem is if you truck is constantly sitting in temps around freezing for weeks or days its cold and your trucks engine is not going to warm up as fast and still be cold. Have you driven your truck for like a hour and got the engine nice and hot and a constant temp 190 degrees. unlike just driving it and just getting it to 190 degrees I would think with a nice hot engine you should be feeling a diff.

but it has always been recommended that if you are in freezing weather lower or turn off timing stuff during that weather.

with my HO pump and smarty on highest timing and my mach 4 injectors I would get a timing knock when cold.
after i did a rebuild with the same parts except adding a stage 3 cam . I dont get that timing knock during my mild winters of upper 20's low 30's. but I also do not have the Hot Rod pump. I wonder how much that pumps advances.

I have a TST powermax 3 box with my smarty. TST is a fuel only , no timing box . the smarty I can adjust timing. maybe you will have to drop the edge and get a fuel only box

Edge comp box....lower timing, i don't believe that is a feature that i can control. As far as I am aware, the only adjustments are low boost fueling and high boost fueling. Nothing about changing timing.

Speaking with the Edge team, they do not offer a stand alone boost or stand alone timing box. This is an old topic of theirs, according to the talk today, but they still have not done one.

Plus 45 degrees drivability...not sure if that makes me feel any better. I'd like to drive my truck every day of any temperature the NY seasons offer.
Truck runs 4/5 days a week. Never sits for weeks on end. When I do drive it, its more than a run to the grocery store.

with the funds dumped into the truck and knowing what i know now, i don't think i may have followed this route.

thanks for your personal feedback.

so the choice may be then is to sell the edge and get a fuel only box or something that you can adjust timing. get smaller injectors ..

Sucks I get it. I'm sorry that Industrial or whomever sold you the HR/industrial pump didn't explain the Timing issues with other boxes.

make sure if you haven't read up on having to much timing and the damage that can be done to the cyl and head.

kind of stuck now.

Edge says, "it was designed for a stock truck". i change mind...dramatically.

Retailer saying, I've got employees with near identical or identical set up and they are in 15 degree temps too. Without any issues.

Guess I'll pull out the Edge and whole wiring, send it to them to check it out. Of course, nothing is for free.
