Draw Straw question

Being I can't get a answer from email and I only get a voice recording when phoning Vulcan does this product reduce the amount of diesel you can pull from the tank? I really do not need to lose range...

I can't remember the instructions that came with it 100% but I think if you do it the way the intstructions say you would probably loose about 2 to 3 inches.I didn't want to loose any range myself so I did my own thing with the kit and put the pickup tube down into the filter at the bottom of the sender unit. It's not hard just need to measure the length carefully. I also wanted to keep the filter in line. I also liked having bio safe fuel line. I think the kit is well worth the money.

No you don’t lose any volume.
The straw is longer than necessary and you trim it to fit your application. Mine it cut to within 1/4 inch of the bottom of the tank and then I added a bevel cut. I just make sure that I fill the tank when it gets to 1/4 tank and I should not have a problem. I have not run mine out of fuel to see how far I can go.
I have also found some original fuel pick-ups on Ebay that were pulled and replaced with in tank units.
If I had found these earlier, I would have used them instead of the draw straw. Just would have saved work time.

Here is a link to the Draw Straw install Instructions. http://www.wideopendiesel.com/Vulcan%20Draw%20Straw.pdf
If you leave off the bottom puck you can cut the hose 1/16" from the bottom and get down pretty far. No you will not lose any volume, in fact it will make your pump work less. Just be sure to put a fuel strainer in front of your fuel pump.

I've run mine into the red and I left the puck on the bottom. My last fill up I added 30 gallons, so that gives you some idea. You see a little fluctuation in pressure when you take off and brake, but nothing major.

I just installed two draw straw 2's for my pickup and return. As long as youre careful about measurement Id say 8mm off the bottom with the tank on the ground should be ok. Once you hang it there will be a little more space but only a couple mm.
I used hot water on the hose and some permatex #2 to slip the hose over the push lock fittings.

My lift pump was just replaced (125k mi.) by a Dodge dealer with the in-tank "Retro-Kit" since the orig. lift pump is now unavailable. I had no choice since I was not driving the truck at the time. Personally, if I had been driving the truck when it failed, I would have opted to keep the orig. tank module and relocate an external fuel pump to my frame rail.

I have the Vulcan Big Line kit w/ext. fuel pump bolted to my fraime rain but isn't fully installed yet.

I just ordered the Vulcan Draw Straw II that goes with the in-tank pump so I can run my externally relocated fuel pump at the same time as the in-tank pump.

My dual-pump setup is partially complete. It also has shut-off valves incase I need to replace my external fuel pump & fuel filter. I'll be running a Holley Black pump in unision with a Racor filter.

My question is, it seems that the best place to put a port in the tank is the bottom. The Vulcan Draw Straw II bolts from the top. It would seem to me to be easier for fuel to travel down and into the external fuel pump rather than have the fuel pulled from the top.

All comments welcome. Thanks!
